LOCAL MATTERS

Suffering Among The Poor - A Colored Woman Froze To Death! - This severely cold winter and the extraordinary price of fuel is putting the poor to a severe test. About five o'clock last evening the body of an old colored woman, named REED, was found in a shanty on Hunter st., lifeless and frozen stiff. The woman was thinly clad and had curled herself up beside the stove where she perished of cold.-
Coroner TREAT took the body to the Dead House and is holding an inquest.

This woman had lived in the quarter of the city where she died more than thirty years and raised a family of children who are scattered over the world. She had a sort of life interest we are told, in the cabin where she had made her home so long.
P. S. - The jury found that Mrs. REED died of cold and starvation.

PLUNDERING A POST OFFICE DRAWER - A BOY CAUGHT IN THE ACT - A day or two since Mr. James VICK, lost the key to his Post Office drawer either by dropping it in the street or by leaving it in drawer. He had reason to suspect on Saturday that the key had fallen into bad hands and was used on that day to enable the party having it to plunder his drawer. He resolved to watch the Post Office yesterday and did so catching the rogue in the act. Mr. VICK and Geo. FRAUNBERGER were standing together near the Post Office when a boy of about fifteen years came and unlocked the drawer and removed letters therefrom. He was seized at once and called to account. He denied at first that he had stolen anything on Saturday last, finally confessed that he had taken some letters and after removing contents had thrown them into the river. How much he had realized in this way is uncertain. The name of the lad is Roderick, and this is not the first difficulty in which he has been involved within a short time. He was taken before Com. STORRS and committed.
