FELL OFF THE RAFT.  A Twelve-Year-Old Boy Drowned at Brewer’s Pond.
George E. TINES, aged 12 years, and a companion named SCHRANK, made a raft out of some old boards down at Brewer’s pond yesterday and after it was completed pushed it out on the pond and paddled around for an hour or two.  Then in some manner TINES lost his balance and fell overboard.  He could not swim nor could his companion, and he drowned before help could be obtained.  George EMERSON who was passing, succeeded in rescuing young SCHRANK and getting him to shore nearly exhausted.  The pond, which is about fifteen feet deep, is much frequented by boys for bathing and is regarded as a nuisance by the residents in the vicinity.  Coroner GRAHAM held an inquest last evening and a verdict of accidental drowning was given.  The jury also considered the pond as dangerous and recommended that an officer be sent there to arrest bathers.   The drowned boy was the son of George G. TINES, a saloon keeper at No. 992 North St. Paul street.

DROWNED IN A POND.  A Dangerous Place on North St. Paul Street.
George TINES, a 12-year old son of John G. TINES of North St. Paul street, was drowned in Brewer’s pond early yesterday afternoon.  Charles SCHRENK, another lad, was paddling about on an improvised raft when young TINES ran down to the bank and leaped upon it.  The raft upset, precipitating the two boys into the water, which is fifteen feet deep.  Another boy on the bank gave the alarm and George EMERSON ran to the pond and succeeded in rescuing young SCHRENK.  The boy was unable to talk enough to inform his rescuer that there was still another to be saved, and Mr. EMERSON went home to change his clothing.  The body of the unfortunate lad was recovered a short time afterward.  Coroner GRAHAM held an inquest last evening.  The jury returned a verdict of accidental death by drowning and called attention to the unprotected condition of the pond and the necessity of providing against such accidents there in the future.
The funeral will be held from the family residence, corner of North St. Paul and Norton streets, at half past 7 o’clock to-morrow evening, and at 8 o’clock from St. Michael’s Church.   KS
