DROWNED

The Sad Ending of a Family Picnic - Valentine Spies Drowned at the Bay -
A School Boy Drowned in a Quarry.

A family party consisting of Valentine SPIES, residing on a corner of Hanover and Baden street, his mother, two sisters, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law, went to the bay yesterday for a day of recreation. After enjoying themselves in various ways, Valentine, in company with two men, went to the cove opposite the Newport house for a swim. It was the third time he had been in swimming during the day. When away from his companions he was suddenly seized with cramps, and sank to rise no more. His cries for help were heard but before assistance could reach him he was beyond the reach of human aid. Coroner MORRISON was notified of the occurrence and repaired to the place. The cove was dragged in the hope of finding the body until 9 o'clock last light, and will be resumed to-day. The friends returned to the city late last night much sadder than when they started out. Deceased was about twenty years of age and unmarried.
About 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon John GEASON, George PETER, and Barney HOMLEN, boys of about 11 years old, went to Turner's quarry, near the toll gate, on the Lyell road, to swim. John stripped, took a board and went into the water. When in the center of the quarry the board slipped from beneath him and he went down. The other boys, who could not swim, did not venture into the water, but remained on shore and witnessed the drowning, but were unable to prevent it. They took his clothes and dinner-basket to his home in Yates in Moulson's nursery grounds. Coroner HARDER was notified and repaired to the scene. When he arrived the body had been recovered and taken home. The coroner on investigation did not deem it necessary to summon a jury, as the case was so plain a one of accidental drowning.
*
SUICIDE

The wife of Reuben CRUTCHFIELD returned from church on Sunday night and then quarreled with her landlord and her husband. In a fit of anger, she swallowed a quantity of laudanum and told her husband she had done so. He thought not. She was on the street till after midnight, then returned. At 4 o'clock yesterday morning her husband, in conversation with her asked if she felt ill. She said she was not. At a quarter to 5 he found that she was breathing heavily, and went for physicians. Drs. HORVEY and STARR attended her, but soon saw that her death was inevitable. She died at 11 o'clock yesterday morning. Coroner HARDER was called and he summoned a jury which returned a verdict of suicide by laudanum. They exonerated him from all blame. She lived in the Lawenstein block of South St. Paul street.
