OBITUARY
Batavia Times
Mr. Thomas J. THOMPSON, son of
James R. THOMPSON of Rochester, died at his residence in Elba on the morning
of the 21st. inst., aged 33 years.
Mr.
THOMPSON was a practical tinner and for the past two years had been
successfully engaged in the hardware and tin business. He was a young man of
more than ordinary promise, frank and genial in his manner, loyal to his
friends, honest and industrious, a good and enterprising citizen, and his
death is a serious loss not only to his own immediate circle, but to the
community at large. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and two children, to
whom he was devotedly attached.
The
funeral services were conducted by the Rev. T. H. QUIGLEY, at the Baptist
church in Elba, at 10 o'clock a.m. on Thursday, and the remains immediately
removed to Mount Hope for burial. R.P.R.
The above
brief but eminently truthful notice of the death of Mr. THOMPSON is from the
pen of Elias P. BARTON, a prominent merchant of Pine Hill, Elba, and regular
correspondent of the Spirit of the Times, published at Batavia from which we
copy. The deceased was ill a little less than a fortnight. Arriving in
Rochester on Thursday afternoon the remains were taken direct to Mount Hope,
where some feeling and appropriate remarks were made by the Rev. Mr. PA__ON,
pastor of the Third Presbyterian church of this city, and Dr. SHAW who had
kindly joined his gifted brother in the ministry to lead the mournful
procession from the depot to the chapel. The beloved dead was laid away in
the cold tomb, after an address to the throne of grace and the pronouncing
of the benediction.
The
parents of the deceased, residing in this city, will receive the heartiest
sympathy of the entire community. He was a young man of rare business
talent, of gentle disposition and hence enjoyed the fullest esteem of his
associates.
