Victor Herald, Victor, Ontario Co., NY        Saturday     Feb 7, 1891

Hon. John VAN VOORHIS and Joseph W. TAYLOR, well known lawyers in Rochester, had a hand to hand fight in the latter's office a few days ago.  The participants met to arrange legal matters, while there some hot words passed between them with the above result.  The two lawyers fought for nearly five minutes, and when separated, both bore marks of harsh punishment.  Both VAN VOORHIS' eyes were in mourning, while his antagonist was badly cut about the face. Both men were taken home in their carriages.  The fight is the talk of the town.  dt

Death of Rev. Andrew Sutherland - Other Announcements

Rev. Andrew SUTHERLAND died at his residence, No. 938 North St. Paul street, yesterday morning, in the 73d year of his age. He was for many years one of the most prominent Methodist clergymen in Western New York. He was born at Cambria, N. Y., July 22, 1818, and was educated at the seminary at Lima and at Oberlin College. He began his ministry at Starkey, N. Y., in 1846, and was a member of the East Genesee Conference from its formation in 1848 down to 1876, when it became merged in the Genesee Conference. After preaching forty years he retired in 1886, and has since resided in this city. Under the Methodist itinerant plan he was stationed successively at Hopewell, Milo and Dresden, Catherine, Bath, Tonawanda, Trumansburg, Newark, Lima, Addison, Alexander Street Church, Rochester, Perry, Nunda, Andover and Webster. He was presiding elder for one term each, of the Geneva, Hornellsville and Lima districts. He was always recognized as a man of broad culture and remarkable clearness of thought. Although a man of positive convictions he was always tolerant to the beliefs of others. Modest almost to a fault he possessed a most singular purity of character. There survive him his widow, three sons, William A. SUTHERLAND and Arthur E. SUTHERLAND of this city, Rev. Ward T. SUTHERLAND of Meadville, Pa., and two daughters, Anna G. and Lulu M., who reside at home. The funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Church Monday afternoon at 9:30 o'clock.
