MORTUARY MATTERS
William WESS, aged 47 years, died last Sunday at his home in Charlotte.
Mary, wife of C. H. COGSWELL, died last Sunday afternoon at the City Hospital, aged 42 years.
Frank K., infant son of August and Johanna SCHIPPER, died last Sunday at the parental residence, No. 21 Dryer Park.
Anna, daughter of George and Anna KLOS, died yesterday afternoon at the residence of her parents, No. 156 Avenue
D, aged 7 years.
Jessie, daughter of William and Maggie TOLLEY, died last Saturday at the home of her parents, No. 22 North Clinton
street, aged 6 years.
John G. VAN VECHTEN, aged 74 years, died yesterday morning at his home, No. 37 Hudson street. He was once a conductor
on the Central-Hudson, and previous to the time of his retirement worked on the Auburn branch. Mr. VAN VECHTEN
left besides his widow a family of one daughter and three sons.
Michael MALLEY, aged 82 years, died yesterday afternoon at his residence, No. 12 Terry street. He had been a resident
of this city for upwards of fifty years, having come here from County Donegal, Ireland, where he was born. His
surviving relatives are one son, James MALLEY, clerk of the excise board, and one daughter, Mrs. Ellen ROYCE.
Charles R. SMITH died at his residence, No. 26 Edinburgh street, Saturday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, aged 68 years.
He was born in the town of Greece, Monroe county, and was a life-long resident of Rochester and vicinity, having
been in business in this city for about fifty years. Mr. SMITH was well-known for his strict honesty and integrity,
in all business matters, it being his boast through life that he never borrowed a dollar of any man. He was a kind
father and husband, and he will be greatly missed by his family. Mr. SMITH was a member of Rochester Lodge, No.
660, F. and A. M., and Ionia Chapter, and was a thirty-second degree Mason. His funeral will be held from his late
residence, No. 26 Edinburgh street, this afternoon at 2 o'clock, under the auspices of Rochester Lodge, No. 660,
F. and A. M.

Dr. FORBES, of West avenue is seriously ill with blood-poisoning.
Miss Kate FIELD who is to deliver her lecture "An Evening with Dickens" at Y. M. C. A. hall Thursday
evening will arrive in Rochester to-morrow afternoon. She will be the guest of George C. BUEL(?); while here.

Dr. L. W. BYAM, of Mumford, was taken alarmingly ill at noon yesterday. Dr. J. W. HOWE, of Scottsville, was called

Chester M. RICHARDS, of Warsaw, died yesterday at noon, after an illness of several weeks, aged about 59 years.
He leaves a wife and two sons, Herbert R. and John RICHARDS, both of Warsaw.

The infant daughter of Charles and Victoria DE FRAIN died yesterday morning at their home, No. 189 Magne street.
Philip SCHWAB died yesterday morning at his home, No. 16 St. Joseph street, aged 28 years.
Dennis McCRONE, aged 47 years, died last Monday afternoon at St. Mary's hospital.
Patrick WASHINGTON, aged 36 years, died yesterday morning at his residence, No. 383 Plymouth avenue.
Louise, wife of James H. CASEY, died yesterday morning at the family residence, No. 16 Saratoga avenue, aged 32
years. She left beside her husband, her father and mother, two sisters and three brothers.
Mrs. Charles P. KIRLEY, aged 23 years, died early yesterday morning at the family residence, No. 43 Culver Park.
Mrs. KIRLEY'S death is a particularly sad one. She was born Miss Catherine LEE, of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., and her
marriage to Mr. KIRLEY in her Michigan home, came to Rochester to live. In this city she made scores of friends
by the amiability of her disposition. The deceased was a parishioner of Corpus Christi Church. Besides her husband,
she leaves an infant daughter, eight days old.
Mrs. Hattie DRESLER, of No. 39 Elizabeth street, received a telegram from Herriman, Tenn., yesterday morning, stating
that Walter A. METCALF had been killed by the cars in that place. The deceased had no relatives in Rochester, but
for five years previous to last year, when he went to Tennessee, he lived here, boarding with Mrs. DRESLER. He
was 45 years of age, and a carpenter by occupation. He was a veteran of the late war, and belonged to the Masonic
order being a member of a lodge at Sackett's Harbor, N. Y., where his father, Frank METCALF, resides. His wife,
Sarah METCALF, lives at Antwerp, N. Y. Mrs. DRESLER will have the remains brought to Rochester for interment and
the funeral will be from her house unless other arrangements is made by his relatives.

Ottilie, infant daughter of Emil and Wilhelmina SENNLER, died last Thursday at the residence of her parents, No.
14 Seager street.
Elizabeth DURRBAUM died yesterday morning at her residence, No. 104 Mague street. The deceased was born in 1811,
and in 1851 came to Rochester, where she has since lived.
Annie E., widow of Peter J. ERNISSE, aged 34 years, died at her home in Greece Tuesday morning. The funeral will
be held from the Memorial Presbyterian Church on Hudson street at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
Sister Mary Opportuna STAAB died last Tuesday evening, aged thirty-two years, at the convent of the sisters of
Notre Dame, on Alphonse street. Her funeral will be at 9 o'clock to-morrow morning at the church of the Holy Redeemer.
John DOYLE died Tuesday night at the City Hospital, aged 58 years. He was taken to the hospital in November last
and consumption was the cause of his death. If he has any friends in the city they are requested to call at the
hospital.
Clara E., wife of Frank W. CLARK, died early yesterday morning at the family residence, No. 72 Pennsylvania avenue,
aged 28 years. Her husband is left with four children, the eldest of whom is but 5 years of age and the youngest
an infant three days old.
George H. NICHOLSON, son of George NICHOLSON, died yesterday, at his father's residence in this city. Deceased
was thirty-eight years old. He was a well-known painting contractor. About two years ago he received injuries in
a runaway accident which are supposed to have been the cause of the disease that resulted in his death. He left
a widow and his father, mother, and one brother, Charles E. NICHOLSON. He was a member of Yonnondio lodge, F. and
A. M. and of Monroe Commandery.
Mathew DOYLE, aged 92 years, died yesterday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Margaret ARMSTRONG, No. 138
Adams street. Mr. DOYLE was born in Ireland and emigrated to Canada nearly fifty years ago. He was a successful
farmer in the Dominion until increasing age compelled his retirement. Four years ago he came to live with his daughter
in this city. He left three daughters and one son; Mrs. Margaret ARMSTRONG, Mrs. Kate DOYLE, Mrs. Agnes MACK and
Luke DOYLE, of Toronto. The funeral will be from the house to-morrow morning at 8:30 o'clock, and at 9 o'clock
at the Cathedral.

OBITUARY
Wooster, Ohio, Feb. 10 - Dr. O. N. STOODARD, emeritus professor of natural sciences in Wooster University, died
suddenly this morning. He was 80 years of age. For a long time he was professor of natural sciences at Miami University
at Oxford, Ohio. Professor STODDARD has among his pupils at Miami University, President HARRISON, Secretary NOBLE,
Hon. Whitelaw REID and Senator BRICE.

FIRE ON HENRY STREET
Fire was discovered in the upper story of Hyman LEWINSOHN'S house at No. ?14 Henry street, shortly before 7 o'clock
last night. The apartments were occupied by Benjamin FREIMAN and family, but no one was at home when the fire broke
out. An alarm was sent in from box No. 132, and the department succeeded in confining the flames to the upper story.
The loss on the house will be about $500, while a little amount will cover the damage done to the household goods
of the FREIMANS.

DEATHS AND FUNERALS
--The death of Mary FAHY, aged 63
years, occurred at St. Mary's Hospital this morning. Deceased was an aunt of
John O'LEARY, engineer of the City Hall. She was a Christian lady and a
large circle of friends will be pained to learn of her demise. The funeral
will take place from the home of her nephew, John O'LEARY, 61 Bowen street
at 8:30 and from St. Mary's Church at 9 o'clock Saturday morning.

died yesterday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Margaret ARMSTRONG.
138 Adams street. Mr. DOYLE was born in Ireland, but immigrated to Canada

Second Baptist Church of this city and has since been known as Deacon
JOHNSON. The funeral will take place from his late residence Friday
afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. F. L. ANDERSON will officiate.

SUDDEN DEATH
Kate ZIMMERMAN, wife of Charles ZIMMERMAN, of No. 12 Davis street, died suddenly at noon yesterday. The circumstances
attending her death are of such a character, that Coroner KLEINDIENST, who was summoned by the husband, has deemed
it best to hold an inquest, and one will be held to-day at 10 o'clock. It seems that Mrs. ZIMMERMAN while returning
from a neighbor's at 4 o'clock in the afternoon of Wednesday, slipped and fell on a crosswalk. Though but a short
distance from her home, she was so badly injured as to be two hours in reaching it. She was carried into the house
by two young men who discovered her condition. Drs. WALLACE and STILWELL attended, the former calling that night,
and the two the next day at noon. While the physicians and Mr. ZIMMERMAN and Mrs. Jane TAYLOR were present the
patient died. The deceased was about 30 years of age, and leaves three children.

afternoon.
--The Republican electors of
Wheatland will meet in caucus to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, at Garbutt,
for the purpose of nominating town officers. The Democratic caucus will be
held at the town hall in Mumford to-morrow evening.
--At a non-partisan temperance
meeting held in Shaw's hall, at Fairport, Tuesday evening, a new party was
formed for the town, to be called the "No-license party," and John
DIXON was nominated as candidate for excise commissioner. N. M. SLOCUM, E.
H. DUDLEY, and Dr. E. B. PRATT were appointed town committee.
--Miss Carrie RULIFSON, of West
Henrietta, was awakened at a late hour the other night by a sleigh which
stopped at the barn. She quickly arose and with revolver in hand pluckily
went to the barn where she met a man whom she asked what he wanted. He said
"None of your business." She remarked "I will see," and
fired at him. Just then two more men came around the barn and all three
jumped into the sleigh and drove off. Miss RULIFSON fired three more shots
at them and is satisfied one of the party was hit.
--A very pleasant gathering was
held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. ROGERS, of Honeoye Falls,
Saturday evening, it being the occasion of their twenty-five wedding
anniversary. The house was tastily decorated throughout. About seventy-five
guests assembled, there being several from Washington, Buffalo and
Rochester. The presents were numerous and costly. Among them was a very
handsome tea set of sixty pieces, and a heavy chaste water pitcher. The
evening was spent very enjoyably with music, and a very appropriate essay by
Dr. A. DANN, of Rochester, was given.
--The medal contest held in the
school house at Garbutt Tuesday evening was well attended. The following
named delivered recitations and declamations: "Two Pictures From
Life," Miss Grace Cook: "Voice From the Poorhouse," Miss Kaly
Higgins; "The Bible and the Liquor Traffic," Royal Miller;
"Prohibition Warriors," Miss Marion Wells; "The Two
Fires," Frank Cook; Vocal duet, Mr. SPRAGUE and Libbie McPHERSON;
"The Arch Fiend of the Nation," Miss Sophia MILLER. The
judges were Stephen BENNETT, Miss May B. HARMON and Mrs. George C. HADLEY.
The medal was awarded to Miss Marion WELLS, with Miss Katie HIGGINS second.

BRITTON, of Williamson, to E. V. SANTIE, of Easton, Pa., is announced to
take place this morning.
--The Republicans of the town of
Walworth will hold a caucus at West Walworth Saturday afternoon to nominate
town officers, and also to elect five delegates to the district convention.
--Miss Rose POTTER, of Marion, and
George W. _ROUCH, of Newark, were married yesterday afternoon at the home of
the bride by Rev. THOMPSON. Both are well known young people. They left on a
trip to Washington.

--The funeral of Tirzah ROOT, aged
82 years, was held at her home at East Albion yesterday.
--Pearl COANN, of Albion, will
publish a daily paper during the hospital loan exhibition at Albion next
week beginning Tuesday.
--The society event of the season
at Holley will be a leap year party to-morrow evening at Bliss hall. About
thirty-five ladies have interested themselves and are making elaborate
preparations. Heinrich's orchestra of Brockport will furnish the music.
--The Tuesday evening meeting of
the Albion Historical Club was one of much interest. Miss A. L. NOBLE read a
paper on "Dickens and Thackery Compared;" Miss Ella B. BENTON a
paper on "The Sepoy Rebellion." A page by Mrs. A. C. BURROWS on
"Modern Humorists," was read by A. c. BURROWS. The committee
appointed last week brought in resolutions on the death of Dr. E. B.
WALSWORTH, which were read by Mrs. O. C. BENTON. Miss Anna E. SEARS read an
excellent paper on Dr. WALSWORTH's work and influence in the club.

ROWLEY, of Black Creek, were married yesterday.
--A Demorest medal contest will be
held in Rushford Wednesday evening of next week.
--Thomas TOWELL, of Rushford, has
just started for Ireland, where some property has fallen to him.
--David EMERY, of Oramel, has
received an increase of pension to $8 per month and $54 back pay. He is
suffering from four wounds received while in the service and is totally
disabled.
--The Rushford Union School
district has decided by a vote of 63 to 13 to raise by tax a sum not to
exceed $1,500 to repair the academy hall. As this sum is nearly all to be
put on the interior of the building, the hall will be put in first-class

--George McKEAN, an inmate of the
county house, fell dead Tuesday morning while about his duties.
--John Wallace CUTLER, assistant
business manager of the Lockport Union, and Miss Winifred Gertrude NICHOLS,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eli L. NICHOLS, of Suspension Bridge, were married
at the Church of Epiphany at 6 o'clock last evening. The affair was one of
the most prominent social events of the season in Western New York. The
ceremony was performed by the Rev. Mr. HUNTINGTON, rector of the church.

ENRIGHT, of Rochester, together with John P. ENRIGHT have presented their
uncle, Michael ENRIGHT of Brockport, their title and interest in the Niagara
brewery, Lockport. Their interest is valued at between $5,000 and $10,000.

Nicholas J. and Antonia E. MILLER, died yesterday morning at the home of her
parents, No. 389 Central avenue.
--Evaline A. WESTON, mother of John
P. WESTON, of this city, died yesterday at her home in Lewiston, N. Y. The
funeral will be held at Lewiston to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.
--Benjamin, son of Amos EMSLEY,
died yesterday morning at the home of his father, No. 96 Flint street, aged
7 years. The home has been particularly stricken, this being the third child
Mr. EMSLEY has lost during the last month.
--Celia HALL died yesterday morning
at her home on Adams street, aged 50 years. Miss HALL was born in Fairport
and for about fifteen years she has held the position of indexer in the
office of the county clerk. She was always a faithful and painstaking
assistant and was universally liked. On Friday last she went to the
office to attend her duties but was obliged to leave and go to her home. Her
surviving relatives are two sisters, Mrs. George STILLSON, of this city, and
Mrs. BRIGGS of Fairport.

--The Baptist society of Le Roy
have succeeded in paying the debt on their church of $440.

ladies' library association of Le Roy, will be held at the rooms of the

Christian Endeavor of the Universalist Church at Le Roy will have a sleigh
