SUDDEN DEATH OF LE ROY HOTEL MAN
Charles Haller Expired After Retiring for Night. Ran the Central Hotel
Le Roy, March 28 - The sudden death of Charles HALLER, proprietor

surprise. Mr. HALLER had suffered from (unreadable) during the winter and about
four weeks ago he fell and broke his arm, but this had nearly recovered and he
was able to be about much as usual. Last evening he retired shortly before 10
o'clock and soon after his wife heard him breathing in an unnatural manner. She
went into the room and was unable to rouse him. Mrs. HALLER then telephoned for
Dr. C. D. GRANEY. The doctor found that Mr. HALLER had expired.
Mr. HALLER was a native of Germany and was born in that country 54
years ago. He came to Le Roy about twenty years ago and for the past year has
conducted the Central hotel, which he had sold recently to Rufus HOWELL of
Somerset, and who is to take possession April 1st. Mr. HALLER was then intending
to return to his home on lower Church street.

WOMAN'S NARROW ESCAPE
Mrs. Simons of Genesee in Peril From High Water in the River
Geneseo, March 28 - The treacherous condition of the high waters
which covers the flats below Geneseo was illustrated last night when Mrs. Almeda
SIMONS, of this village, attempted to cross the valley by carriage. The highway
appeared flooded only at intervals with indications that no deep water would be
encountered. Nevertheless at the first attempt to pass one of the flooded points
the horse strayed slightly from the road and the carriage was precipitated into
mud and water wheel high. The driver at once cut the harness and released the
animal and sent for assistance.
Before any help was secured the flood waters had risen until the
carriage seat was submerged and eventually Mrs. SIMONS was rescued from her
perilous position only (line unreadable) nothing was visible of the vehicle
except the whip. It was a narrow escape and to-day no one is willing to give the
highway a further trial.

THE NIAGARA MONOPOLY BILLS
New York World
The Niagara power grab bills at Albany are a group of measures such
as could never pass an honest Legislature.
The bills aim at the seizure and destruction of Niagara Falls, a
priceless nature asset of the state, at the creation of a trust monopoly beside
which existing power and electric corporations will be pigmies; at the licensing
of this new corporate monster to exercise almost unlimited powers for the
condemnation of private property in any city of the state in order to establish
its plants and rights of way.
Certainly Governor HIGGINS can veto these bills. He could not do
otherwise under his oath of office. But no executive act can absolve legislators
who give the measures a carrying vote.
