GEO. M. ELWOOD DIES AT HIS HOME
George May ELWOOD died at 2
o'clock this morning at his home, No. 18 Vick Park B. He was one of the
well-known men of the city. Mr. ELWOOD was born in Rochester in 1844.
Excepting a few years of his early life spent in Chicago, he had always
been a resident of this city. About 1860 he entered the Traders Bank and
was connected with that institution for two years, leaving it to become
superintendent of Moore's Rural New Yorker.
In 1869
he entered the insurance business, forming a partnership with the late
Edward Meigs SMITH. This partnership continued until 1878. Then he sold
out his insurance business. After that he was an adjustor of fire losses.
Mr.
ELWOOD was descended from a distinguished Puritan ancestry. His
forefathers fought in the Revolutionary war. In 1896 he was elected
president of the Rochester Historical Society. He had also been
prominently identified with patriotic societies, being one of the original
members of the Rochester Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution
and having served as one of the Board of Managers of the Empire State
Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was one of the earliest
members of the Society of the Colonial Wars.
Mr.
ELWOOD was also a member of the Ex Libris societies of Washington, Great
Britain, Paris and Berlin, a fellow of the Royal Microscopic Society, a
member of the Genesee Valley Club, the Citizens' Club of Syracuse, and one
of the early members of the old Lotus Club. In 1882 he married Miss Mary
CHENEY, of this city, also a descendant of Puritan ancestors.
No sketch of
Mr. ELWOOD'S life would be complete which made no mention of his
collection of bookplates and of old and rare books and manuscripts. For a
number of years this was the relaxation of his leisure hours and he had a
very interesting collection, including rare first editions, manuscripts
and deeds dating back beyond the time of the invention of printing and
many books which were presented by the authors and contain their
autographs.

CAST AWAY WITH LONELY LION
Strenuous Experience of a Young
French Girl
Tame Lion a Companion
(Seattle Post-Intelligencer)
Liela
PONQUET, a handsome French girl, now nearly 18 years old, cast away on an
almost desert island in the middle of the Indian ocean, thrown on her own
resources, the young woman - a female Robinson CRUSOE - lived for fifteen
months before she was picked up by the British trading schooner Cyprus and
brought safe to Noumea, New Caledonia, where she was turned over to the
French officials and sent back to her home in Marseilles.
At
Marseilles she was reunited with the father and mother. They had parted
when the little French barkentine Lilly, after a brave fight with the
typhoon, lurched and sank.
The
typhoon struck on December 15th in the morning and for over three days the
little vessel, under bare poles, fled before it. And during it all Liela
helped the men, and when they fell from exhaustion she worked at the
pumps, strong, vigorous, tireless, her athletic training standing her in
good stead. On the 18th hope was abandoned.
The tired
vessel, worn out by the battle with the sea, gave up about noon. The
stearing gear broke. The little barkentine turned broadside, wallowed a
few moments and sank. The father and mother reached the boat, but Liela,
with seven others, was swept overboard.
Then begun the
strange career of the girl. She remembers struggling in the waters; then
she lost consciousness. When she awakened it was dark. She felt something
warm upon her face, and starting up in alarm found Mons, her pet lion,
licking her face. The lion had been cast ashore, and although one of his
legs was badly hurt, he was still alive, and together the exhausted girl
and the crippled lion lay down and slept.
That was the
first night of 553 that the young girl and the lion lived on the speck in
the center of the vast ocean.
Liela
did not know then, or until she was rescued, where she was, but the little
speck upon which they had been cast is one of the minute islands northward
of Bellona reefs, toward the Chesterfield islands, and from the south side
of their <snip> didn't get the rest.
