TIES ROPE AROUND HER NECK AND DROPS OVER BANISTER
Miss Mary Keane, of Geneva, Commits Suicide While Family Is at Church
Geneva, April 5 - While suffering from melancholia, Miss Mary KEANE, aged 52, committed suicide by hanging this morning at the family home, No. 32 Center street. Miss KEANE had been afflicted with melancholia for some time, but the family had no idea that she contemplated suicide.
This morning her mother and sister, Miss Winifred KEANE, went to mass at 7:30 o'clock leaving Miss Mary home. When they returned home Mrs. KEANE remarked to her daughter that their coffee was not ready. Thinking that something was wrong Miss KEANE instituted a search of the house, in the dining room a stairway leads to the upstairs and is separated from the room by a curtain. Miss KEANE, pushing back the curtain, discovered the lifeless body of her sister hanging from the banister with a rope around her neck.
With almost superhuman strength Miss KEANE released her sister and carried her to a couch and summoned Dr. D. CAMPBELL, but life was extinct. Coroner George S. FLINT was called and after learning the facts decided that an inquest was unnecessary and issued a certificate of death from suicide due to melancholia.
Miss KEANE had worked for a number of years for the late S. K. NESTER and former Mayor George F. LICHT. Besides her mother she leaves four sisters. Mrs. M. M. CLEARY, of Ithaca; Mrs. J. D. HOUCH, of Chicago; Mrs. A. J. SCHENKLE, of Rochester, and Miss Winifred KEANE, of this city. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning from St. Francis De Sales Church, and burial will be made in St. Patrick's cemetery.
