WIFE SHOPS IN ROCHESTER, NEW JERSEY MAN VANISHES
Tuesday noon Earl R. GRIFFIN of New Jersey swung his roadster to a stop at the
corner of Main and St. Paul streets, said "so long" to his wife who
had a few purchases to make and disappeared.
That strange tale was brought to Police Headquarters
last night by Mrs. GRIFFIN. They had been on their way from their home in
Netcong to visit a relative, Charles BAKER, in Spencerport, she told police.
Her husband was to return and pick her up in a few
minutes, Mrs. GRIFFIN said. When he failed to appear, she went on to the
Spencerport address. Although the car would be conspicuous because of its New
Jersey license plates, it had not been located late last night by police.
GRIFFIN was described as 30 years old, 5 feet, 9
inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, dark complexion. His wife assured police
that she could find no reason for his disappearance.

ONE JAIL TERM NOT ENOUGH, HORSE BEATER GETS ANOTHER
For the second time in as many years Karl GRAFF of Jackson Road, Penfield, has
been sentenced to Monroe County Penitentiary for six months and fined $50 for
cruelly beating a horse.
GRAFF was given the sentence by Judge Emmett KELLY of
Penfield last night on conviction after his arrest by Sergeant Harold KEMP of
the State Police and Agent Rudolph PANZIAU of the Humane Society.
Investigating complaints of neighbors that GRAFF was beating his horse,
attached to a farm implement, with a club. KEMP and PANZIAU found the horse so
badly injured that it died.
Its head, they reported, was virtually beaten to a
pulp.
William J. BOYINK, superintendent of the Rochester
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said last night that GRAFF
was arrested for a similar offense a little more than a year ago. He was
sentenced to six months at that time and served the sentence.

BOYS TRYING HOME MADE RAFT AND FISHERMAN
LOSE LIVES WHEN THEY SLIP INTO RIVER
The muddy current of the Genesee River claimed two victims yesterday, one a
14-year-old boy who braved the stream on a flimsy raft and the other a
fisherman who slipped from the Summerville pier.
The boy, whose body had not been recovered last
night, was James HEINSLER, 10 Bauer Street.
The man was Leo G. ANZINGER, 34, of 37 Atkinson
Street. His body was recovered yesterday morning at 11 o’clock.
The HEINSLER boy and two playmates had been swimming in the river just north
of the Driving Park Avenue bridge, according to Policeman Harry McFARLIN and
firemen of Hose 10. James decided to build a raft according to George ECKAM,
12, of 25 Aab Street, and Jimmy POLVINO, 12, of 83 Hillcrest, the playmates.
LOSES BALANCE ON RAFT
Shortly before 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon,
James pushes out into the strong current. About 20 feet from shore he lost his
balance and plunged into the water, struggling and screaming for help. The two
youngsters ran to Hose 10, Fireman called police, but the boy was nowhere to
be seen.
Later Paul LATIES, 45 Dewey Avenue, who had been fishing north of the scene of
the tragedy on the west bank, told investigators he saw the empty raft float
past. Strength of the current prevented morgue attendants from dragging the
river. A Coast Guard boat in charge of Mate William JOHNSON set out up the
river at 6 o’clock in effort to find the body.
ANZINGER’S body was recovered by Surfman John R.
HORTON of the Coast Guard crew at 10:55 a.m. more than four hours after he had
slipped from the pier.
A companion, Harold DeFRIEST, 17 ½ Greenwood Street,
told Coast Guardsmen he lowered a fishing rod for ANZINGER to grasp, but it
broke and the victim was swept outward into the current. ANZINGER disappeared
a short distance beyond the pier.
Coast Guardsmen under Capt. Mason B. McCUNE and Mate
William JOHNSON began dragging immediately.
According to Deputy Sheriff Ray O’LOUGHLIN, DeFRIEST and ANZINGER had driven
to Summerville in ANZINGER’s car. ANZINGER was said to have lost his balance
when he lowered a minnow pail into the water.

Drowns While 3 Search For Rescue Lines
Undetermined Whether Seneca Falls Man Fell or Jumped
Seneca Falls, June 10 - Waters of the Seneca-Cayuga branch of the Barge Canal
claimed its first victim of the summer season today when Joseph SAWADA, 45, of
1 Bridge Street, was drowned in approximately 24 feet of water just west of
Ovid Street bridge.
Whether SAWADA fell, slipped or jumped into the canal
could not be learned, as investigation by local police failed to find anyone
who was a witness. SAWADA was last seen walking along the bank of the canal
about 2:30 o’clock. First indication that the man was in distress came
shortly after this hour when several persons in the vicinity of the Lehigh
Valley coal trestle saw him floundering in the water several feet off shore.
Body Soon Found
Three unidentified persons who saw SAWADA threshing
about in the water just after he was last seen on shore ran to get a rope, but
when they returned he had gone down for the third time. Notified that a man
had fallen into the canal, Kenneth WAYNE of 20 East Bayard hurried to the
scene with a set of home made grappling hooks and with the first cast from
shore succeeded in hooking on to the clothing of the drowned man. One of the
spectators attracted to the scene put through a call to Geneva for the rescue
squad of the Associated Gas and Electric Company, which made the trip from
Geneva to Seneca Falls in record time.
The rescue squad, consisting of Thomas McGRATH,
Lester MILLER, George SCHROEDER and E. G. CLARK, made a valiant attempt to
save the man’s life by means of artificial respiration, but was ordered to
cease operations after 15 minutes when Coroner F. W. LESTER appeared on the
scene. Coroner LESTER pronounced the man dead and ordered the body removed to
116 Fall Street, where an autopsy will be performed tomorrow morning by Dr.
Robert F. GIBBS and Dr. J. E. ALLEN. Coroner LESTER late today was
undetermined whether there would be an inquest.
SWADA, a native of Australia and resident of Auburn
for many years, had resided at the home of his sister, Mrs. Mary MOULTON, in
this place for the past six months. Mrs. MOULTON is the only immediate
surviving relative.
