These biographies were copied from old histories of Monroe County and Rochester. Most of these histories have some bigraphies included of the prominent people of the time. Also one stand out is Landmarks of Monroe County, N.Y. which had a section (number III) that included short paid biographies. The biographies were usually written by the person themself so the details should be considered as very reliable. A few of these are over a page in length but there are also a couple that are only 60 words in length.
One biography of note to Rochesterians is the biography for George Eastman who at the time had just begun Eastman Kodak and was still only the Treasurer and general manager of the company. Another local inventor that few have heard of is James Cutler who invented the mail chute for dropping mail in large buildings to the lower floor for pick-up. His invention isn't even mentioned in his biography. Most of the biographies are of men but there are a few biographies of women like that of Christine Emberry who was a successful farmer.
