From its founding on November 28, 1896, to the present, the Mary Washington Colonial Chapter, NSDAR, has had a long and distinguished record of service consistent with the NSDAR’s objectives of historic preservation, promotion of education, and patriotic endeavor.  Some examples of our service are:

Historic Preservation

 

· Work to preserve Fraunces Tavern

· Work to preserve and restore the Morris-Jumel Mansion and contribution of furnishings and decorative items thereto.

· Escorted Queen Elizabeth II on a tour of the Mansion.

· Placement of eight tablets marking historic sites in New York City

· Placement of markers at Revolutionary War veteran gravesites

· Contribution of books to the DAR Library

 

                 

     

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

       

 

· Financial contributions to historic preservation activities honoring George Washington, Lafayette, Mary Washington, and others

· Restoration of the Washington inaugural flag for presentation to New York City Hall

· Placement of stone honoring Alexander Hamilton at the Valley Forge Bell Tower

· Contribution of furnishings and decorative items to NSDAR’s Memorial Continental Hall and DAR Museum in Washington, D.C.

 

 

Promotion of Education

 

· Establishment of the first classes in New York City history

· Sponsorship of winning Christopher Columbus essays in the state  (2002) and national (2001) competitions

· Establishment of several scholarships, including an annual scholarship at the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in Alabama

· Annual presentation of Good Citizenship Medals to New York City students

 

 

 

Patriotic Endeavor

 

· Annual participation in the New York City Flag Day Parade

· Annual presentation of ROTC Medals in New York City

· Awarded the first ROTC Medal to City College

· Contribution of 13,182 hours of service to the American Red Cross between 1939 and 1942
