Our Militia are ordered to appear armed and equipped as the
law directs, on Monday next, Sept. 5, for inspection and review at
Hewlett’s Hotel.
A State Draft to fill up the Militia companies has been ordered to
take place immediately.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1864
On Saturday last the following parties residing in the Town of Hempstead were drafted, at Jamaica, for the purpose of filling the
ranks of the State Militia. We are indebted to the Hon. Seaman

1. Richardson Abrams, Bloomfield Square
We have been requested by Supervisor Snedeker, to desire the citizens
of this town to furnish him immediately with the names and residence
of all persons from this town, who have enlisted in the Navy of the United States prior to Feb. 1, 1864, in order that proper credit may be claimed for them on the present quota.
The utmost exertions are being made to fill the quota of this County,
and now that the allowances of many recruits has filled the quota
of New York and Brooklyn, it is hoped that more volunteers may be
obtained, and we may be enabled to fill our quota. The Journal
says that about 450 men have been credited to Queens County. We have
heard nothing in regard to the draft, but if we all work with a will
and who any signs of filling our quota without drafting, it is probable
that the draft will be postponed.
On Saturday last, in a speech made at Auburn, by Secretary Seward,
he said "We shall have no draft, because the army is being reinforced at the rate of five to ten thousand men per day by volunteers" and Secretary Stanton says that if Grant has 100,000 more men he will be
able to make short work of the rebellion and use up Lee as Sherman
has used up Hood. Men are being sent to Grant as rapidly as possible,
and it is hoped that the end is very near.
There will be no draft in New York City or Brooklyn. The credit to
the State for naval enlistments was finally arranged and approved by
the Secretary of War on Saturday. New York City is credited with 18, 448 men; Brooklyn, 6,046; Buffalo, 1,328; other portions of the State,
1,808; previously credited, 117; total, 27,746. The Government notifies Gen. Townsend that the present bounties to recruits will be continued until further orders.
There has been no order postponing the draft, but it seems
to be understood that the necessary preparations are not so far
completed that it will take place on Monday next, as originally
ordered. In the meantime Volunteers and substitutes will be
received and credited on our quota which is no where near
being filled.
