Letter dated 30 October 1953 at Washington, DC from Major-General William E. Bergen, USA in which he writes: "Thomas Johnson was enrolled and mustered into service 7 October 1861 at New York, NY as a private, Co. B, 1st. Reg't, New York Mounted Rifles, and was honorably discharged as a private 30 November 1863 at Yorktown, Virginia by reason of his reenlistment as a veteran volunteer. He reenlisted as a private in the same organization 1 December 1863 at Yorktown, Virginia; was transferred to Co. E, 4th Re't, New York Provisional Cavalry and was honorably discharged as a private, 29 November 1865 at City Point, Virginia."

Thomas Johnson died in 1912 and is buried in the cemetery of Trinity-St. John's Church, Hewlett, LI
