Obituaries:
(1)SELAH H. BRUSH-Selah H. Brush, who had served several
terms as Justice of the Peace of North Hempstead, died
at his home at Port Washington on Wednesday from
consumption, from which he had long been a sufferer.
Deceased was an honorable man, a good neighbor and a
worthy member of Morton Lodge, F.& A.M., whose members
attend his funeral on Sunday afternoon next, at 1 o'clock,
to take charge of the services.
(2)SUSAN O. JENNINGS-The announcement of the death of Mrs.
Susan O. Jennings, the wife of Mr. Stephen O. Jennings, will
be of regret to our villagers, among whom the deceased has
lived together upwards of fifty years-years that had seen
its pleasures and hardships-always devoted and happy because
spared to each other. The affliction is a great one and our
sympathies are extended to the bereaved family.
(3)MRS. FRANCIS PINE-The remains of Mrs. Frances Pine, whose
death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. F. Robinson,
in Jacksonville, Florida, on the 10th inst., were brought to
the village on Sunday last. The funeral service was held Monday
evening, from the residence of Mr. J. A. Bedell, Jackson street,
The Rev. J. A. Davis, officiating. The interment was in Greenfield
Cemetery. Four days previous to her death Mrs. Pine was stricken
with paralysis, from which she never rallied. Deceased's husband,
Mr. Samuel Pine, died thirteen years ago this month. Mrs. Pine
was a consciencious member of the Presbyterian church, (having
united with that denomination, we are informed, when she was
16 years old), a kind neighbor, and a woman highly esteemed
by all. She was in her 80th year.
(4)BARNARD POWERS-Mr. Barnard Powers, who formerly resided in
Henry street, this village, but of late years, has been a resident
of East Meadow, died of paralysis on Sunday, having been stricken
two days previously. He had been to the city on Thursday, feeling
apparently as well as ever. The next day he was stricken, never
regaining consciousness. Deceased was about 65 years old. Since
he has been established at East Meadow, he has engaged in the
dairy business. Honorable in every business relation of life,
charitably inclined toward every one, a life of great usefulness
has closed. His furneral, held on Wednesday, was largely attended.
The interment was at Westbury. The family in their bereavement
has the sympathy of the community.
(5)GEORGE WILLETS-An old and respected resident of our village-
Mr. George Willets-died quite suddenly at his home on Franklin
street, last Monday. Though he had not been in good health for
some time, he failed very rapidly at the last. A little more than
a week ago, he had a fall, while passing along Front street, which
affected him considerably. This with his sickness and infirmity,
prevented his rallying. The funeral service will be heard on Friday
at 1:30 P.M., members of Hempstead Lodge, I.O.O.F., attending, of
which body he has for some years been an honored member. A son and
daughter survive the deceased, to whom the sympathy of our community
is extended. Though deceased possessed some wealth, he was opposed
to any display and many deeds of charity and assistance has he rendered
to deserving ones, which only those assisted will ever know.
