VAN HORNE - MAY 2, 1997

According to a deed on file in Schenectady County Courthouse, my gg-grandfather, John Johnson VAN HORNE was living in Cambria in Niagara County, on 13 October 1838. By 1840, he was living in Racine County, Wisconsin, with his wife and teenaged son. This John VAN HORNE is not to be confused with the Van Horns of Lockport, he is a cousin to that family, but not of that family. His brother, William Henry VAN HORNE is also believed to have lived in the area. John was born 2 September 1800, in Schenectady. He is believed to have had three wives, Minerva WIX (or possibly MIX), Hannah HALSEY and Mary SMITH. I believe he married Mary about 1839. Any information about John Johnson VAN HORNE, or his descendents by his first two wives would be greatly appreciated.

VROOMAN, Phebe

Trying to find more information on Phebe VROOMAN who married John HOWELL and lived in Porter Township, Niagara County, New York. Phebe VROOMAN's parents were Tunis Vrooman and Polly Sykes. Both born about 1786-1800 in New York. John Howell's father was William HOWELL, and John's brothers were Daniel and Stephen HOWELL. I have been putting together all of the ieces of the HOWELL family together and this is the conclusion I have come to. Please understand this is only conjecture. Considering the Howell families on the New York 1840 census, I feel that William Howell (1771-1780) was the father of three sons, Daniel (1791-1800), John (1807) and Stephen (1801-1810). In addition, the enumerating of the households is rather meaningful. In the census, this is the order of the households as reported by the census taker: William Howell Tice Ripson (brother to Catherine who married Stephen Knapp) Stephen Howell (William's son) John Vrooman Sidney Vrooman Solomon Moss William Moss Tewnis Vrooman John Howell (William's son) William's son, Daniel, was here in the Porter town in 1830 and 1840, living about 1 1/2 miles east of the above. There is the chance that Daniel's wife was Sally who died 14 Feb 1847 of consumption of the blood. She was 46 (b 1801), was married and a housewife. It's possible that they had a daughter Mary E. who died 2 Feb 1847 of consumption at age 2 (b 1845). On the 1850 census there are two unaccounted for children who may have been Daniel's--Daniel, 22 (b 1828) who was a clerk for Peter Tower, and Nancy, 17 (1833) who was living in with the John E. McEwin family. Also see: Family Tree-Howell If you do make a connection please make sure you get a hold of me! {pretty please!} Thanks! - Mar 1998
