Biography of Col. Silas TITUS, 122nd NY Onondaga Vol Regiment

Information about Col. Silas TITUS and Dennis McCARTHY

The Titus Family of Syracuse circa 1858

The Gentleman is Col. Silas Titus, commander of the 122nd NY Volunteers (Onondaga Co,).

His son Silas W., dauther Elizabeth, wife Eliza and son Robert.

The oldest boy in the photo (left) is my Great Great Grandfather, Silas Wright Titus.  He was born in 1849.  In the photo, he looks like he is about 9 or 10 years old, but I'm not sure.  That would date the photograph in the late 1850's, a few years before the war.

The woman, Eliza (MCCARTHY) is the daughter of Thomas MCCARTHY and Percy SOULE.  Thomas McCarthy was a prominent man in Salina in the early 19th century.  He fought in the War of 1812, and he was one of the originators of the Bank of Salina.  He went to Florida in 1847 due to poor health and died there in 1848.  See "Pioneer Irish of the Onondaga" (Theresa Bannan, 1911, pg 12-19).  Percy Soule is supposedley a descendant of George Soule of the Mayflower, but I have not been able to make the connection.

The picture is a reproduction.  I have no idea where the original is or how this copy was made.  I think I might be able to find out from a second cousin, Paul O'Brien, who has been researching Col Titus and the 122nd long before me.

The first time I saw this picture was at my Grandfather's 75th birthday party in 1990.  It was presented to him as a gift.  He displayed it on a wall in a hallway in his home.

A few years later, I began the work on my family history.  My Grandfather (Austin Titus) gave it to me knowing my intrest in keeping the family archives.

Col. Silas TITUS

In this picture he is wearing Captains Bars, which dates the photo around the summer of 1862.  The photo was taken by "M Lzzierf, No. 8 S. Salina St, Syr-NY"

If anyone knows where the original of this picture is, please contact Leo Titus
