THE ACCOUNT BOOK OF TOBIAS GOODFELLOW: 1831 - 1867

Account book, courtesy of Jake Hullar

Transcribed by Kathy Crowell February 18, 1999

Ichabod and Phebe Goodfellow family were among the earliest settlers in Fayetteville, having arrived on or before 1796 at which time they acquired a deed of conveyance for property on lot 75.  Erwin Fellows, author of the Goodfellow history, believes they were here as early as 1795.

Tobias Goodfellow, son of Ichabod, was born October 22, 1798 and died on February 28, 1868 in Fayetteville, NY.  He was married to Polly Corey, daughter of George and Catherine Burgess Corey, the latter marrying John Goodfellow following her husband's decease.  Catherine and John died in 1832.

George Corey, who was Polly's nephew, built Tobias' brick homestead in 1841 at the N.W. corner of Highbridge St. and Audubon.  The house cost under $100 to build.  Corey, who was paid $90, absorbed the cost of the lath, brick, boards for the door, use of Tobias' team to draw the lumber, and most of the plank and nails.

In addition to Polly,  Tobias' heirs  included his granddaughter Jane Worden, daughter of his deceased daughter, Betsey, and children living when Tobias wrote his will on August 11, 1865:  Jasper; George; Charles C.; Sabrina Northrup, wife of Calvin; John; Ichabod D.; Catherine Fulmer, wife of Hiram Fulmer, and Tobias, Jr.

The following account book became part of Tobias' estate and was delivered to John Goodfellow by Tobias' executors, Nathan R. Chapman and Orlow D. Blanchard.  It passed through heirs to William Goodfellow and then to his cousin, Jacob Hullar 3rd, son of Jacob and Doris Goodfellow Hullar.   The document is in excellent condition for its age.

The inner front page contains the following:
