Seven of the 12 companies that made up the regiment were raised in Onondaga County, and Syracuse was the point from which the regiment went to the front August 8, 1863.  Others:  Tompkins, Niagara, Orange, Ulster (missing one).  700 men left here in 1863.  The 31 battles and skirmishes were all in Virginia, and the years 1864 and 1865.

A. W. Dains brought with him a battle-flag (to a reunion) used by the late General Sheridan while in command of the cavalry of the Potomac, before the Shenandoah Valley campaign, which was given to Mr. Dains by the General's old band.
