In 1772 Tryon County was created. It covered the western and central part of New York State. In 1783, after the American Revolution, Tyron was renamed Montgomery County. In 1789 Ontario County was created from part of Montgomery County. In 1802 Genesee County took over the land west of the Genesee River. Orleans County was created from Genesee County on April 15, 1825. Orleans County is 23 miles across from east to west and 16 1/2 miles from north to south. It was only sparsely settled in the early 1800's but grew rapidly.

Orleans County is bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, Monroe County to the east, Genesee County to the south and Niagara County to the west.

US & NY Genweb

This page is part of the USGenWeb Project. Modeled after the Kentucky GenWeb Project which was organized by a group of genealogists in March and April 1996, the idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In June 1996, it was decided to expand the project to include all states.

We strive to be as accurate as possible but concede that there may be some errors due to illegible copy, poor quality of stones, human error etc. We hope that this site is a help to researchers and used to help them gather information but is not to be considered the final word or source.

If you would like to contribute your data or create a county page within New York State, please contact Robert Sullivan, USGenWeb NY State Coordinator.

Visit the NY Genweb site.
