Charles Benton who replaced him, “at own request” was a face-saving gesture]; (7/2/35 in Ireland-2/6/18 at Albion, NY); son of English father Joseph and Scottish mother Ester; immigrated 1841; Printer, and later Publisher of The Saturday Chronicle in Albion 1876-84?; invalid pension 4/11/91; married Nancy Catherine Littebrant (8/3/40 at Schoharie, NY-6/14/30) circa 1860; widow pension 3/4/18; both at Mt. Albion

NY-8/26/24 at Elkhart, IN); married Mary L. Snyder (7/11/44 in Cambria Center, Niagara Co. NY-4/25/34 at Elkhart, IN) 5/29/67; later he was an Insurance Agent; held many “17th reunion” offices; invalid pension 8/29/04 in NY; 1915 Ridgeway Census “Retired”; moved to IN in 1916; widow pension Mary L. 10/11/24 in IN, both buried at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart, IN; see Hevenor


Note: There is an internet site about Canadian soldiers who served in the Civil War that lists William Griffis, Levi Hurd, Michael Slack, Lorenzo Smith, Luke Waldron, and Alonzo Weed as being born in Canada. I have notified the site that only their WIVES were born in Canada; perhaps because the goal seems to be to prove that something like 50,000 Canadians served it doesn’t get corrected.

This list contains a few men who may have been in the 17th only by clerical error, and a few others who should be included may have been missed.
