WOMAN’S MISSIONARY UNION

The Missionary Union of the Oswego Baptist Association held its first anniversary Tuesday evening, Aug. 30, 1881, in the First Baptist Church of Oswego.  A preliminary meeting was held in the lecture room at 7 P.M., Mrs. L. Golden presiding.  Opened with singing, “ Nearer my God to Thee.”  Reading scripture, Miss A.M. Coit of Central Square; prayer offered by Mrs. Golden.  Letters were read from the different circles of the association.  These expressed a general and gratifying increase of interest in the cause of missions.

Two new circles have been organized since the last meeting of the Association, viz: At Sandy Creek and Albion.

At 8:00 p. m. the meeting adjourned to the audience room of the church.  The public exercises were opened with an anthem by the choir.  Reading of scripture by Mrs. D. D. Owens, of Central Square.  Rev. Mr. Owen offered prayer.  After singing of hymn, the President of the Missionary Circle of the First Church, Oswego, gave an address of welcome.

The report of the Secretary of the Missionary Union read and adopted;  also the report of the Treasurer, Mrs. M. B. Comfort of Pulaski.

Mrs. Owen read a letter from Miss Emily Payne, a teacher in Maulmain, addressed to the ladies of the Oswego Association and giving an interesting sketch of the early life of our present preacher, Moung Shway Gyah.

Mrs. A. N. Goodell of the Bassein Mission, who had been engaged to give the address, failed to fulfill her appointment, Revs. M. B. Comfort and G. H. Brigham, Dist. Sec’y Am. Baptist Miss. Union, very kindly occupied the time.  Mr. Comfort spoke of the great usefulness of the native preacher and the good work that women are accomplishing in the foreign field.  Rev. Mr. Brigham showed the necessity of liberal gifts to the cause of Missions and its effect as a means of spiritual growth to those who contribute.

After an anthem by the choir, a collection was taken.  The meeting closed with the L. M. Doxology and Benediction by Rev. Geo. Grafftey.

Wednesday, Aug. 31, 12 M.

Mrs. L. Golden presiding.  Mrs. S. Randall, of Oswego offered prayer.  After reading the Constitution, the Society proceeded to elect officers for the coming year.—Mrs. L. Golden was re-elected President.  Several ladies spoke in commendation of the manner in which Mrs. Golden had discharged the duties of President, and of the pleasure at her re-election.  After some discussion, it was voted to amend Article II of the Constitution  to read as follows:  The officers shall consist of a President, three Vice-Presidents, a Secretary and Treasurer—no two being chosen from the same society.  The following were elected Vice-Presidents:  Mrs. M. E. KINGSFORD, West Oswego; Mrs. Rev. Ainsworth of South Richland;  Mrs. J. H. McGahen of Mexico,--Mrs. S. M. Coon of First Oswego, Secretary and Treasurer.

Moved and carried to hold a semi-annual meeting at a time and place to be arranged by the Executive committee.  Adjourned, subject to the call of the Com.

   Mrs. S. M. Coons, Secretary
