Sandy Creek Town Clerk's Record
of Soldiers & Officers

This list was generously sent in by Mabry Benson, who transcribed the Sandy Creek's Town Clerk's Record of Soldiers & Officers a couple of years ago.  Mabry has provided some additional information on the civil war records available for Oswego County.

In the State Archives in Albany, New York, are listings made by the Town Clerks of those who served in the Civil War. These are also available on microfilm through the Church of Latter Day Saint's Family History Library. FHL microfilm #1993425, contains most of Oswego County (except Amboy). The towns included on this film are Constantia, Hastings, Orwell, Oswego, Palermo, Parish, Redfield, Richland, Sandy Creek, Scriba, Schroeppel,  and Williamstown.  The information given is Name, Residence, Date & Place of birth, Rank, regiment & company, When enlisted, When mustered, Length & place of enlistment, race, bounty paid by town & county, Relief granted family by town, Single or married, Parents, Previous occupation, Promotions, resignations, discharges, deaths, place of burial & present post office.

However, not all the information is filled in. In Sandy Creek, the parents names including mother's maiden name is given in many of the cases. In other towns such is not the case. Of the 235 different names, 126 give the name of the father, and 48 give the name of the mother. In Richland, few parents' names are given, and then only the father's name.

The Register for Sandy Creek was done 2 Oct 1865.  I did not transcribe all the information. I eliminated duplicate listings which occurred when men re-enlisted. Most of the writing was quite legible, but in a few cases I could not make it out and used ??.

*Note:
For further information on any of the names, please contact the local Historical Societies.  Military records can be ordered from the National Archives.
