Sarah W. Grant - Who recently celebrated her 98th birthday at her home in Martinsburg -

Sarah W. Grant was born in Stamford, Connecticut on July 7, 1808. Her father was Jehue Seely and her mothers name was Rhoda Weed. There were six children, Sarah W., Mary, Eliza, Warren, Amazy, Arnariah. Mrs. Grant is the only survivor. Her father moved to the town of Lafayette, Onondaga county, New York when she was a small girl. Her father served in the American Army in the war of 1812 and was at the battle at Sackets Habor. She had a brother in the southern army and two sons in the northern army during the Civil War. Mrs. Grant formerly lived on what was known as the reservation near Pompey Hill. She attended meetings when a young girl in Syracuse, when there was not a church in the township. Meetings were held at the little old school house standing where now is the heart of the city of Syracuse. Her father moved from Lafayette to Hastings, Oswego county, about the year 1822 or 1823, into the woods, and commenced life in making a home for his family. He was a shoemaker by trade and here he found employment in making boots and shoes for the growing town for miles around. Mrs. Grant was among the first school teachers in the town of Hastings, and received one dollar a week and "Board around" among her pupils. Mrs. Grant was married July 7, 1831 to John Benedict Grant. She is the mother of seven children, five of whom are now living, the first child dying in infancy and Louis Younglove dying in the 57th year of her life. The survivors are Mrs. Anna M. Bass now of Schenectady, Amazi G. of Michigan, Rev. A. J. Grant of Martinsburg, Neuman Grant of Hastings, Oswego county, Rev. Luman A. Grant of Syracuse.  Mrs. Grant lived in Hastings nearly all her married life, until 1870, when she and her husband John B. Grant, went to live with her son A. J. Grant.  Since that time they have belonged to the itenerancy for upward of thirty years.

John B. Grant, her husband, departed this life on August 4, 1896, at North Western, Oneida county, New York, at the age of 93. [other reports and tombstone indicate that he was 91 yrs old]

Aug. 12 - John B. Grant died at the home of his son, Rev. A. J. Grant at Ava, Oneida county [NY], on Sunday morning. He was a former resident of this place. His aged wife survives him, also five children, Rev. A. J. at whose home he died, Amzi who resides in Michigan, Luman of Syracuse, Newman of Holmesville and Mrs. Henry Bass of Leonardsville. Deceased was 91 years old. He was a brother of Mr. Nathan D. Grant of this village, also of Alexander Grant of Syracuse. His funeral services were held at the church here on Tuesday last at 2 P.M. conducted by Rev. Mr. Wall of Ava, NY.
