Jarius Wilcox's company, Col. Jeduthan Baldwin's regiment and served in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth and others.  Asa was at the taking of Burgoyne and assisted in placing the great chain across the Hudson River at West Point.
After the close of the war, he settled in Cheshire, CT.  There he owned four acres of land worth $40.  This land he traded with an old soldier for a lot in the Military Tract in New York State.  This particular lot was Lot No. 2 in the Military Township of Hannibal located on the shore of Lake Ontario three miles west of Oswego.  In later years, this lot was part of an area taken from the Town of Hannibal to create the present Town of Oswego.
In 1789, he moved with his family from Cheshire, CT, to Acra, Green Co., NY.  In 1795, they moved to Rensselaerville, Albany Co., NY.  In 1795, while the British were still in possession of Oswego and there was no settlement in the area west of Oswego, he came to view his lot of land.  In February 1797, he moved his family to Whitestown, Oneida Co., NY.  By selling a part of his land, he obtained enough resources to move to his lot near Oswego.  Thus on September 26, 1797, he left Whitestown for a wilderness home on the shores of Lake Ontario.  On October 6, 1797, Asa Rice, his wife, and several of their children became the first permanent settlers there.  He christened the place Union Village, but it is now called Fruit Valley (then part of the Town of Hannibal, but now in the Town of Oswego).  That first winter was very difficult.  Upon arrival, their only shelter before a log shanty could be built was a tent borrowed from the fort in Oswego.  Food was scarce and baby Horace died of starvation.
Gradually, other settlers arrived in the area prompting the need for some type of local governing body.  In 1798, the townships of Hannibal, Lysander and Cicero were organized into one township and Asa Rice was named Supervisor.  He reported fifteen inhabitants and the value of taxable property at $1,500.  He continued as Supervisor until 1806.   On the first tuesday of April in 1806, the first town meeting for Hannibal was held  at the home of Matthew McNair, an innkeeper in the Village of Oswego.  Asa Rice was elected a Town Assessor and also a Commissioner of Gospel Lots.
Asa Rice, his wife, and two children, and one other, possibly a brother to Asa, are buried in a private cemetery described as being on the west side of the Union Village Creek about 20 rods below the bridge near the spot where the family first settled.  The cemetery contains forty or fifty graves which were marked with crude stones, all without inscriptions except the Rice graves.  At one point a substantial stone wall surrounded the cemetery and an orchard was planted there, but now the cemetery has largely been reclaimed by nature.

 i. DAMARIS8 RICE, b. 178124; d. 185224; m. AUGUSTUS FORD, 1800, Fruit Valley, Town of Oswego, Oswego Co., NY25; b. October 12, 1772, Providence, RI26; d. August 04, 1855, Sackets Harbor, Jefferson Co., NY27.

Notes for AUGUSTUS FORD:
When he was nine years old, Augustus ran away from home and went to sea as a powder boy aboard a privateer headed to the West Indies to bring back supplies furnished by the French for the American army in the Revolutionary War.  While sailing, he soon learned the science of navigation.  When he was fourteen, he sailed from Providence with Captain Eliot on the Washington for Canton, China, by way of Cape Town.  On one of his sailing adventures, he was captured by the British who were prone to seizing American sailors from ships at sea.  This practice was one of the factors that eventually culminated in the War of 1812.
He and his shipmates were taken to the Isle of Wight ( also known as the Isle of Jersey), but were eventually released.  He and four other men sailed the brig in which they had been captured across the stormy Atlantic back to the United States.
After his return, he went to Albany, NY, to visit his brother who was attending school there.  While there, he heard of a sailing expedition to Lake Ontario to trade with Indians and promptly joined.  He arrived in Oswego on July 7, 1797, one year after the British had evacuated Fort Ontario.  He was in command of a vessel on the American side of the lake but was totally ignorant of the Lake.  Howeever, over the next 12 years, he proceeded to chart a major portion of the Lake noting distances between ports and locating dangerous shoals.  Actually, Ford Shoals, three miles west of Oswego, are named after him.
In the fall of 1809, a brig called Oneida  with 16 guns was constructed at Oswego under the authorization of the US government and put in the command of Lieut. M.T. Woolsey.  In March of 1810, Augustus Ford received a warrant from the President of the United States ordering him to report for duty on the Oneida as Sailing Master.  In the fall of 1811, the Oneida was taken to Sackets Harbor and was cruising the Lake when war was declared by the US on Great Britain in June of 1812.
Commodore Chauncy arrived at Sackets Harbor with officers and men and eight vessels were made ready for immediate use as part of the war effort.  Unfortunately, not one naval officer was familiar with the Lake.  This fact prompted Commodore Chauncy to summon  Ford who was familiar with the Lake.  The Commodore proposed that Ford make three charts of the Lake -- one for Ford's use, one to be sent to Washington and one to be retained by the Commodore.  As part of the bargain, a plate would be engraved and 40 copies would be made so each commanding officer could have a copy of the chart.  Augustus Ford would have the personal copyright for the chart and would be compensated accordingly.  Augustus had the three charts completed by the middle of May in 1814, but Commodore Chauncey never lived up to his part of the deal and the charts were not published.
At various times up to 1842, Augustus Ford was in command of the naval station at Sackets Harbor.  On occasion he was also called upon to assist the United States Engineers.  For example, when it was proposed to construct a breakwall in the Oswego harbor in 1826, Augustus did the survey.  His drawing showed the breakwall and listed all the depths inside the mouth of the Oswego River.  The government also hired him to do a survey of the eastern coast of Lake Ontario in 1836-37.
The Ford family lived at Sackets Harbor while he was stationed there.  He and his wife were known to have 13 children.
