BIRTHS
1794 March 8th
Cornelia Defreest
Was Born and baptised By Sebriska at Wynantskill
Greenbush NY Rens
[NOTE from LVB: The churchbook of the Wynantskill Dutch Reformed Church
(then in the town of Greenbush but now in the town of North Greenbush)
has no entry for this baptism, and Dominie John Lansing ZABRISKIE did not
become pastor of this church until 10 February 1801. This suggests
to me that this entry in this Bible was made long after the fact.]
1795 June 12th was son adam Born and was Baptise by
minister Romaine at winantskill
[NOTE from LVB: The Wynantskill baptismal register does indeed confirm this baptism;
the birthdate is given as 12 June 1795, the baptismal date is given as
12 July 1795, the child is named as Adam, and the parents are named as
Simon WESTFALL and Lena WEVER. Dominie Jacobus Van Campen ROMEYN was
Wynantskill's first pastor, serving from 21 January 1794 to 20 October 1799
(and also performing some baptisms in 1800, before the second pastor, Dom.
ZABRISKIE, arrived in 1801).]
1790 august the thirteenth was my daughter Lydia Born and Baptised by
Devitt at Rinebeck flats
[NOTE from LVB: Rhinebeck Flats is in Dutchess County, NY. Therefore,
this Bible entry is an indication that Simon WESTFALL and wife Eleanor WEAVER
moved from Dutchess Co NY to Rensselaer Co NY between 1790 and 1795.]
1797 august thirteenth was my son John Born and Baptised by Romaine at winantskill
[NOTE from LVB: This baptism is not recorded in the Wynantskill churchbook.]
1802 october 2 was my third daughter Born and Baptised By sobrisky at winantskill
[NOTE from LVB: The Wynantskill baptismal register shows that Elizabeth was
born 24 October 1802; parents are named as Simon Westphal and Lena Wever.
Elizabeth married Barent KARNER on 25 October 1826 at the same church.]
1700 [sic] march 17 was my second daughter anna
Born and Baptised By wigtaman
[NOTE from LVB: The baptismal registry of Zion Lutheran Church in
Sand Lake shows that Anna was born 17 March 1800 and was baptised 27 May 1800;
the parents were named as "Simon Westphal und uxor Magdalena geb. Weber" (Simon Westphal
and wife Magdalena born Weber). Anna married William MOTT on 24 May 1817 at
Wynantskill Dutch Reformed Church. George Joseph WICHTERMANN was pastor
at Zion Lutheran from 24 February 1800 to 8 July 1801.]
DEATHS
Cornelia Westfall
died september 11
1871 age 77 years six
month and three days
[NOTE from LVB: The date-calculator tool shows that this death date and this exact age
at death yield a birthdate of 8 March 1794.]
Adam Westfall
Died Nov 20th [no year given]
[NOTE from LVB: The New York State Deaths Index in Albany shows that
Adam Westfall died 20 November 1883 - but see below, where his death date
is given as 20 Nov 1882. Was his age at death 88y 5m 8d?]
aged 88 years 3 months
eight days [added in pencil] he died [10 o'clock?]
[next page]
Adam Westfall Nov 20th 1882
Violia A Westfall Dec 11th 1868
Rachel Westfall Jan 20th 1820
[NOTE from LVB: This would be the death of Adam's first wife,
Rachel KARNER, who had just given birth to their son John Westfall on 18 Jan 1820.]
Adam Westfall [crossed out]
Cornelia Westfall sep 11th 1871
Julia A Westfall dec 1st 1869
[NOTE from LVB: This would be the death of Julia Ann ___, wife of David Westfall
and daughter-in-law of Adam Westfall and Cornelia Defreest.
The 1870 US Census Mortality Schedule for Sand Lake, Rensselaer County, NY
indicates that Julia A. Westfall age 39 years died in December 1869 in Sand Lake.
I don't know who Violia was, but she may have been an infant of David Westfall
and wife Julia Ann.]

[NOTE from LVB: It would be tempting to conclude that these numbers
could be the death year, the birth year and the age at death of Adam's father Simon
Westfall. However, this is not possible. Simon is buried at
Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, in the hamlet of West Sand Lake,
in the town of Sand Lake, Rensselaer Co NY. A listing of gravestone inscriptions
indicates that Simon Westfall died on 7.23.1832 at the age of 67 years
8 months and 23 days. These figures together yield a birthdate of 31 October 1764.
The will of Simon Westfall of Sand Lake, Rensselaer Co NY was dated
14 February 1832 and was probated 29 October 1832
(Rensselaer Co NY Surrogate Court Will Book 12 page 269). This will
names the testator's wife, Lany; his sons Adam, John, Christopher and Ebenezer Westfall;
his daughters Anna Mott, Elizabeth Karner, Lucinda Cipperly and Lydia Lappies;
and executors Bernard Karner and John Westfall.
Witnesses were Nicholas B. Harris, Jacob T. Fellers and William P. Fellers.
Alas, the dates cannot be for Simon's wife Lany, either; her death in
Sept 1849 is recorded in the 1850 US Census Mortality Schedule.]

[NOTE from LVB: The wording in this Bible transcription of the births of Adam's siblings ("1790 august the thirteenth was my daughter Lydia Born") suggests either that the Bible may have previously belonged to Adam's father and mother or that someone copied these entries verbatim from an earlier Bible.]
