Old Mount Ida Cemetery (also known as
the Old Troy Burial Ground and later
as the Prospect Park Cemetery)

Old Troy Cemetery is also known as the Mount Ida Cemetery. Stephen Van Rensselaer gave the land to the city in a deed dated 20 January 1815. In May 1915, the Philip Schuyler Chapter of the NSDAR, under the leadership of Jesse Wheeler, copied gravestone information in this cemetery. The late Janet Derbyshire typed the interments from a list published in The Troy Record on 7 July 1916 and graciously allowed us to display it here. About 500 gravestones were transcribed. At that time, there had been much vandalism, and sadly, the cemetery is now completely destroyed.

There appears to be a lot of confusion about the name and location of this cemetery. Chris Philippo informs me the cemetery was called by many names: Troy Burial Ground, Old Troy Burial Ground, Old Troy Burying Grounds, Old Burying Ground on Ida Hill, Ida Hill Burial Ground, Old Ida Hill Cemetery, Old Mount Ida Cemetery, Original Mount Ida Cemetery, Mt. Ida Prospect Park Cemetery (genealogist Loretta M. Nial used this name) and Prospect Park Cemetery. It was located north of the Poestenkill, on the eastern slope of Prospect Park, south of Hale Street with the entrance having been from Cypress Street.
