New York Civil War Soldiers Buried in Key West, Florida |

In July 2007, Scott Holden
emailed the following to me: "I am researching the unit where a lot of those soldiers
came from. I don't think they were buried in the "Key West Cemetery", which is a
public cemetery; rather, [I think that they were buried] in the military cemetery at the
Key West barracks."
After receiving this brief note, I investigated further. These people may have initially been buried at Fort Zachary Taylor in Key West, in the fort's Key West Post Cemetery. If so, then in 1927, they were among the 468 people who were REMOVED from this cemetery, which at that point was abandoned, and who were reinterred at Fort Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida, in the grounds of what is today known as the Naval Air Station Pensacola (NAS Pensacola).
