Welcome to RGS
RGS began in 1938 when several people at a meeting of the Rochester Historical Society formed an informal group to preserve their family heritage. The Rochester Genealogical Society became an independent organization in 1977. Since that time, we have experienced steady growth and currently have over 400 members from the U.S.A. and Canada. Our members are researching families in all regions of the world.

We sponsor regular educational activities and encourage member-to-member support. Our membership is comprised of people from all walks of life, who freely offer help or guidance to other members whenever asked.

Whether you are a well-seasoned genealogist or family historian, or are just starting out, we are confident that you will find your membership in the Rochester Genealogical Society beneficial.

Rochester Genealogical Society (RGS)
RGS Meetings
We have eight or more meetings per year with speakers and/or workshops on a variety of genealogical topics. Between 100 and 120 people usually attend our general membership meetings. Our current meeting place is at Asbury First United Methodist Church at 1050 East Avenue, Rochester, New York. Most meetings are the third Thursday of the month (September through June, except December). Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings. Officers
The Officers of The Rochester Genealogical Society for 2006/2007 are shown on the RGS Officers page.

Bylaws
The RGS Bylaws are also here on our Web site. They will tell you how your society is organized, its purpose, the descriptions of officer's and committee head's duties, and other vital information.
  
Computer Interest Group (CIG)
CIG Meetings
RGS also sponsors a Computer Interest Group which has over 200 members and separate meetings. We discuss new genealogical software, Internet technology and other things that may be of interest to the genealogical researcher with a computer. All computer users are welcome, regardless of the operating system they use. While Windows OS is used by most CIG members, you will also find a regular contingent of Macintosh users. CIG Notes
Notes and presenter's handouts from selected CIG meetings are available through the CIG Notes HomePage. This is a new feature. Look for it to continue to grow as time goes by.

Newsletter & Publications
Our Newsletter
[HY icon]Currently, the “Hear Ye, Hear Ye” is 12 pages in length and contains information on Western New York resources, notices of events, stories of member's projects, and research inquiries. Our newsletter is published four times a year.

Some of the earliest issues of our newsletter, the “Hear Ye, Hear Ye” are available online. More recent issues will be added as time and resources permit.


RGS Publications
We also have several RGS publications for sale of special interest to genealogists. These include items we have published and those from other sources.
  
Membership in RGS/CIG
If you are interested in becoming a member, you can print the membership form, fill it out, and mail it to the address on the form.

Our membership year begins on July 1st of each year. RGS membership for U.S. residents is $20 per year. A membership in the Computer Interest Group offered for an additional $5 per year. (Dues for Canadian residents are $25 (U.S.) for RGS, and $5 (U.S.) for the CIG. Elsewhere in the world, please ask. All funds must be drawn on a US bank.)

RGS Surname List
We maintain a list of surnames being researched by RGS members. You will have to have the Contributor list and the Membership list to know who is researching these families. These only come with membership in RGS.
