Censuses in Staten Island and City Directories

We have census data online!

Everybody knows that the Federal Census was taken every ten years. But do you have any idea how valuable the state censuses are? For example, the 1855 State Census (unlike New Jersey) contains way more information than the 1850 or 1860 Federal Census [i.e. NY county of birth and # of years resident of town or city]. I strongly recommend you investigate these resources. Yes, they will take time, as they're not indexed, but it's time well spent. For most years, Staten Island is only one roll.

Censuses from The Family History Show: Federal Censuses from 1790; Colonial Census: 1663-1772; Loyalists: 1782; State Censuses: 1814, 1835, 1845, 1855, 1865, 1875, 1892, 1905, 1915, 1925; Union Veterans & Widows: 1890.

Census Indexes are now appearing at online subscription services! If you are an ancestry member, you can search their online census indexes. Their advantage: You can soundex search.
If you are a genealogylibrary.com member, you can look thru their online census indexes. Their advantage: you can search a specific state, or state and year, if you like; also that you can browse the records.
I've noticed that spellings are atrocious; be very flexible.

Marie also provided the FHL film numbers by ED:

Index Notes:

There are few indexes for State Censuses of Richmond County. Use a city directory to look up an address, then a finding aid for ED [I hear they do exist], and search the ED in the census.

Online Passenger Lists - Thanks to the generosity and heavy-duty typing of Bob O'Connor, we now have online the passenger list for the Packetship Ashburton which sailed from Liverpool on 22 January 1847. We are also collecting links for other online passenger lists for ships which arrived at New York during any time period...see our Passenger List Page for all the goodies! Thanks so much Bob!
