Bates Family 

     On a sunny day in August 1933, while walking along Schoharie Road (Rt 145).Viva (Bates) Kennedy, was struck down by automobile which then drove off, failing to stop and help her and her injured children.
     Viva was mortally injured along with two children and an unborn child. Cecil, her son, had been walking along side Viva was thrown onto an embankment, he was the only survivor. Viva's' husband Daniel Kennedy was in a near by field tending to a herd of cattle, upon hearing the accident he ran to Schoharie Road. (Rt 145) There before him lay his wife and two children. The family never totally recovered from their lose, Daniel soon lost all interest in life.
     The driver was later apprehended. It was later discovered that the driver of the auto deliberately drove his car into Viva, all because because she was part Mohawk Indian.
