Mrs. Jesse H. Alger
Middleburgh News
May 7, 1908
Maria Alger who
died at her home in Brookyn Hollow, April 29th, was the widow of Jesse H. Alger
remembered by many as a man pf good judgement and of strict integrity. Mrs.
Alger's maiden name was Lawton, daughter of Peleg Lawton and she was born April
8th, 1822 within a mile of where she died. She never lived, so we are informed,
farther than a mile from her birth place. All who knew Mrs. Alger will have
pleasant recollection of her. She was of a social nature and always enjoyed
company; she will be missed by neighbors and friends as well as by her immediate
family. She was the mother of eleven children. Six of them, four sons, Charles,
Jacob, George and Jesse and two daughters Mary Ann and Martha are still living.
She had 36 grand children, 37 great grand children and two great great grand
children. Of her father's family one brother Peter Lawton survives her.
Her funeral took place from her late residence Saturday
afternoon attended by a large number of relatives, neighbors and friends. The
sermon was by Rev. P. H. West. Interment in the Dutch Settlement cemetery by the
side of her husband who died several years ago.
