Some Schoharie Surnames and Variations

 

Spelling was not fixed in Colonial times and so variations abound. Often names were spelled as they sounded. Many Dutch and German names were changed to something that sounded similar but had an English spelling. Here are some of the names we have noticed in more than one form. We have tried to put the later English name as the primary one, reasoning that if you are working back up your family tree, that is the one you are more likely to have.
