Weston G. Mickel obituary

This is the obituary of my great grandfather, Weston G. Mickel, published in a Canajoharie newspaper Nov. 20, 1930.

WESTON G. MICKEL

At his home near Carlisle on Thursday morning Nov. 13th, Mr. Weston G. Mickel passed peacefully away.

He had not been well for some time, still the end came suddenly of heart trouble. He was the son of Andrew G. and Hannah Werthe Mickel and was born in the town of Carlisle on March 26, 1843 making his age more than 87 years. He responded to his country's call at the time of the great Civil War and enlisted on August 20, 1862 in Schoharie regiment 134 New York Volunteer Infantry, at the age of 19 years. He was a color sergeant and carried the flag through all the battles of the Army of the Potomac, including the battle of Gettysburg. Later the regiment was transferred to the west to the army of Gen. Sherman. Sergeant Mickel the flag from, "Atlanta to the Sea", thence to Washington for the Grand Review. He was honorably discharged as First Lieutenant on June 10, 1865.
In 1870 he married Miss Jennie Johnson who passed away in September 1919. He is survived by two sons, Andrew Mickel and Adam H. Mickel, Supervisor of the town of Carlisle, and one daughter Mrs. Mary Warren of Canajoharie, six grandchildren, Allen Weston Mickel of Carlisle, Mrs. Harold Gilman of Ilion, Arlington Maxwell of Albany, Irene and George Mickel of Carlisle, and Richard Weston Warren of Canajoharie, also two great grandchildren, Robert Mickel of Carlisle, and Dorothy Gilman of Ilion.

The funeral was held at his home on Saturday at 2 PM, the house in which he had lived for 42 years, and it was filled with relatives, friends, and neighbors who appreciated Mr. Mickel as a kind neighbor, and a worthy citizen, all down the passing of the years. Rev. C.B. Nauman of Carlisle Presbyterian church officiate. He was buried with full military honors, the service being conducted at the cemetery by the American Legion of Cobleskill.
