Hon. William T. JACKSON
Havana, NY
A businessman, born at Chester, Orange co., NY on Dec.
29, 1794,
son of John, grandson of William.
William (Sr.) Jackson emigrated from Ireland to America
c.1735.
William Sr.'s brother was Colonel Richard Jackson
who remained in Ireland.
William Sr. came to Goshen, NY to teach and was married
there.
When the Rev. War broke out, he remained at Goshen.
William Sr. was known as "Post" Jackson in the army
for carrying
and collecting messages. William Sr. died at
Goshen.
His 5 sons and 3 daughters were born there including
John who was father of Wm. T. in the picture below.
John Jackson married Mehitable Terry (dau of Uriah,
who fled
Forty Fort during the Wyoming Massacre). John
Jackson came to Catharine,
now Montour, NY in 1824 and died at Syracuse, NY in
1831.
William T. Jackson was eldest of 3 brothers and 1
sister - Hiram, George W. & Julia.
William T. lived in various places in NY, then went
to the frontier area of Illinois
with Major James D. Wadsworth, to form a surveying
business, a journey
which took 2 months. When Wadsworth died in
Illinois, William T. Jackson
returned to NY on horseback.
William T. was married (1)on Jan. 26, 1822 to Anna
Decker
(dau of Simon Decker of Havana, NY). They had
11 children - with 3 surviving in 1879
- Hiram B. Jackson, William Henry Jackson, Isabella
G. Jackson (Mrs. Horace V. Weed).
In 1825 they came to Havana, NY. In 1836 William
T. was a co-partner
with Simon & Sidney S. Decker in a mercantile
business & bought
the old Bowers mill ( Deckertown mill). He built
an oil mill which was
later the Dunham Bros. woolen mill.
Mrs. Wm. T. Jackson (Anna Decker) died in 1848.
He was married 2nd to Miss Mary D. Hine of Blooming
Grove, Rensselaer co., NY
- she died in March 1853.
He was married (3) to Mrs. Ailsworth of Havana, NY.
- she died Sept. 1870.
A fire on Mar. 7, 1857 caused him to a large business
loss.
He sold out to his sons who moved to Winona, MN.
Wm. T. was married (4) to Miss Mary E. Snyder
of North Hector on Aug. 8, 1873.
