III.
THE FAMILIES OF ROBERT AND MATTHEW PAUL
OF UNION, CONN.

In an address delivered at the Centennial Reunion at Lake Mashapaugh, in Union Conn., Aug 30, 1876, and afterwards printed in the Tolland County Press of Stafford Springs, Conn., in the edition for Thursday, Sep. 7, 1876, Volume 9, Number 23, Rev. Charles Hammond, who had gathered a great deal of material for an history of the town, stated that its first settlement was co-incident with the immigration of the Scotch-Irish, which, having begun about 1718, continued until 1730, and, perhaps, later; that the town was settled by them; that among its early settlers of this stock were town brothers, Robert and Matthew Paul; that Robert was called Senior, was a man of good estate and education, and lived at the Abbot House, socalled, afterwards occupied by his son-in-law, Cabel Abbot; that he had no son, and that his daughter, Esther, married Capt. Thomas Lawson, who commanded a company of twenty-six volunteers on the Lexington Alarm; that Matthew lived on the Fairbanks place, that his wife, according to tradition, was a Roman Catholic, and that his family, having removed from Union, became settlers of Walpole, N.H. - See record which follows of the family of Matthew Paul, of Walpole, N.H. - There were, however, other early settlers of Union named Robert Paul of Needham and Union - And facts concerning one person or family may have been referred to another, yet so far as information has been derived by correspondence from the town records:

FIRST GENERATION.

Matthew (101) appears to have been of Needham, Suffolk Co., Mass., and afterwards of Union, Conn. His wife's name was Sarah, and among his children were

--202 II. Sarah Paul, b Mar. 25, 1726, died at Union Apr. 25,1755
