G.W. and Amelia Parker, aged 8 mo. 'Darling little Willie sleeping, Beneath the autumn
leaves; But he will waken by and by, When Jesus comes in glory, To gather home his
sheaves. A priceless treasure God has taken, More precious here than gold, But when
thus, he makes us sorrow, He clasps our darling in his arms, And takes it to his fold. A
little bud transplanted, To a more genial clime, Where it shall bloom forever, With
beauty all untold, Beyond the shores of time.
Died. At his late residence in Dekalb, N.Y., Oct 1st, 1876,
after a brief illness, Mr. Ephraim Johnson at the ripe age of 76.
The funeral services were held at his recent home on Tuesday A.M. at 11 o'clock,

Co, Mass. Sept. 22d, 1800. At the age of 20 he embraced Christianity and was
baptised into the fellowship of the Baptist Church. When 30 years old he came to
Northern New York and settled upon the farm where he lived 46 years previous to his
death. In life, appreciated and beloved by all who knew him, in death lamented as a
worthy husband and father, an esteemed citizen, and a consistent Christian. To those
who glory in the faith once delivered to the saints and who love the peculiar
characteristics and distinctive features of Baptist doctrine, the recollection of his life as
he led it will ever remain a solid endorsement. His was a life 'known and read of all
men.'

Died. In Fullerville, on Friday, Feb. 2d, Miss Effie Davidson,
daughter of Freeman H. and Lucy A. Davidson, in the 19th year of her age. Miss Effie
Davidson, who departed this life on Friday last, and whose Funeral services occurred
on Sunday, with the Rev. Mr. Collins of Depouville, officiating, should recieve a public
tribute to her excellence of character as a daughter, a sister, and a school mate; her
purity of mind and daily life exerted that unobtrusive influence which won for her a
place among the good women who hold the first rank in the defence of social virtue, as
such she should be honored with tender and loving memory. A great sufferer, yet a
patient endurer; uttering no complaint through months of fearful pain; full of
thankfulness for every word of sympathy and every effort to lessen her distress; she
presented an example of fortitude well worthy of admiratiion, founded as it was upon
the perfect trust in the wisdom and goodness of God. Her attachment to father, mother,
sisters, and brothers, and all her relatives and friends, was endearing and strong, and
excited a fervent desire to remain with them, yet in the consciousness that this could
not be, she was entirely submissive to the Divine will, and without a murmer awaited
the dread fiat (?) in the cheerful confidence that she would meet her dear relatives and
friends at the appointed time in the Spirit Land, 'over the river.'
One that knew her well and intimately, offers this tribute to her memory in earnest
sincerity and regard. [02/02/1877]

Died. (transcriber's note, there were two obituraries for Amos
Hildreth in close proximity on the same page (19) of the scrapbook). First follows: At
his residence at "Rock Island," November 13th, Amos Hildreth, aged 88 years. Mr.
Hildreth was born in Chesterfield, New Hampshire. In 1787 he moved to Herkimer with
his parents. He was a soldier of the War of 1812, was married in 1819, and moved to
St. Lawrence County, crossed the river in a boat, purchased 1,040 acres of land on the
island near Hailesboro, and cut the first tree for clearing. About seven years ago he
moved to Gouverneur.
Second obiturary follows: Died. Hildreth. In Gouverneur, on the 13th inst, Amos
Hildreth, in the eighty-eighth year of his age. Mr. Hildreth was born in Chesterfield,
N.H., in 1789, and came from Herkimer county to St. Lawrence in the year 1819. He
settled in what is now Hailesborough. He made the first clearing for a building that was
made in Hailesborough, and also helped to cut the timber from what is now Main street,
Gouverneur. Mr. Hildreth was a soldier in the war of 1812, and his many
reminiscences of skirmishes between Sacketts Harbor and Ogdensburg were indeed
interesting. He moved from Hailesborough to Gouverneur about seven years ago. His
life has been a long and useful one, and he was remarkable for his nobleness of
manner and quietness of disposition, as well as for his constitution, never having had
any sickness until the spell which resulted in his death. He leaves a family of five

Died. Burdell. In Charleston, S.C., June 30, 1876, of typhoid
fever, Helen McFalls Burdell, wife of T. Street Burdell, aged forty years and
twenty-eight days. The subject of this memoir combined in beautiful symmetry the
gentler virtues which win our love, and those noble and heroic qualities which dignify
the character of woman and challenge our admiration. When a devoted husband and
father was shorn of his manly strength by an incurable and wasting disease, the
heroism, fortitude and self reliance of the noble wife and mother sprang from the bosom
of gentleness and love to meet the emergency. Qualified by education and experience
for the duties of teaching, she resolved to undertake the support of her family. With
that natural pride and independence of character which shrinks instinctively from
becoming a beneficiary upon the bounty of others, she bravely ventured to bear her
heavy burden alone. Her highest earthly aspiration was to see her children educated
according to her lofty ideal of Christian manhood. To this task she consecrated herself
iwth an iron will and entire self-abnegation. It was evident to all that she had laid
herself upon the alter of sacrifice, and that every day was adding fuel to the flames that
consumed her precious life. When the raging fever seized upon her prostrate frame, it
found her vital forces too far spent to resist the assaults of disease, or to furnish a
hopeful basis for medical skill. Calmly and bravely she yielded to the will of Heaven,
committing herself and her family into the strong and loving impress of her Saviour.
She lived long enough to impress her noble character upon her sons, (the only
daughter is taken while we write), and to develop a noble type of womanhood. While
we recall her stately form, her countenance of more than ordinary beauty beaming with
intelligence and cheerfulness, we shall cherish a lively remembrance of her example of
Christian fortitude and sacrifice, rebuking our discontent and selfishness, and
stimulating us to nobler and better lives. -- Charleston (S.C.) News.

resided with his son in Ontario, N.Y. His sickness was protracted and his sufferings
though severe were borne with resignation. He frequently expressed a desire to go
home. Three of his children have gone before, five yet survive to mourn his loss. Two
years since he followed his companion to the grave. One brother and sister remain of
a family of eight. He was an esteemed citizen, warm friend, beloved brother, and a
faithful laborer in the vineyard of the Lord. We mourn his loss, yet not as those without
hope. 'Rest, dear brother, pain is o'er, Rest on the celestial shore; Yet a little while we
linger, Then we'll meet to part no more.'

Died. In this village, May 30th, of Neuralgia, Mrs. Polly C.
Thompson, in her 84th year. Although several months have elapsed since the death of
this good sister we can not forbear giving a few words in testimony of a life so
singularly pure and good in all its details. Her life was truly one of suffering, being for
many years afflicted with that terrible disease known in the olden times as 'ticdoleroux',
and lately as neuralgia. For hours her sufferings were so intense as to call forth the
most excruciating cries of pain. But never one murmer was heard from her lips, her
only reply as friends anxious to ease her pain tried to sympathise with her , was 'I
deserve it all.'
Her loving trust in Jesus, her intense longing to depart and be with Him; and her pure
and childlike faith in the promises contained in holy writ were characteristic of a life like
hers. 'To her death had no sting, as she often exclaimed in broken accents between
the intervals of pain 'Oh death, where is thy sting.' Her mind was a storehouse where
had been laid away in hours of health so many precious passages of scripture, and so
many portions of hymns which were peculiarly suited to her intense sufferings. On the
last Sabbath of her consciousness when speaking to her daughter of the day she
repeated these beautiful lines: 'Sweet is the day of sacred rest, No mortal cares shall
seize my breast; Oh may my harp in tune be found, Like David's harp of solemn sound.
Life to her was real and earnest and her early years were spent in efforts to do good
to those about her both spiritually and temporarily. For 61 years she was a professed
follower of Christ and a member of the Congregational church. Her efforts united with
those of her husband Dea. Thompson in the Sabbath School cause in the early years
of their married life were productive of much good. They having established one of the
first Sabbath schools in Jefferson County. The towns of Champion and Wilna have
witnessed results of the labors of these two faithful servants of the Lord who have both
gone home to Glory.
She was born Feb. 8, 1793, in Hartford, Washington Co., N.Y. In Nov. 1817, she was
married to William Thompson. Three sons and one daughter were the results of their
union. In 1864, as the infirmities of age came creeping on, this aged couple came to
reside in Gouverneur with their daughter, Mrs. Chas. Heald, where she found many
warm friends who will long cherish as a previous legacy the hours of friendly
intercourse with her and the words of wisdom which fell from her lips. Her consistent
life and her triumphant death are pleasant to remember, and those who loved to hold
sweet communion with her when her sufferings would permit can only find comfort in
the thought that for her is laid up a crown of glory which will grow brighter and brighter
until its glory is lost in the everlasting day. [05/30/1877]

Died. Picket. On Sunday the 10th inst., Anna Lee, daughter
of Horace Pickit, formerly of Edwards, N.Y., aged ten months. It was but a few weeks
since Mr. Pickit and his wife, a daughter of Daniel Peck, Esq., of Gouverneur, left their
adopted home in Purgus Falls, Minn., and with their little darling child, the idle of their
hearts, came on a visit to relatives and friends in this county. Having visited friends in
Edwards, where Mr. P. was engaged in the mercantile business for several years, his
business affairs demanding his attention, the mother was left with her baby to enjoy her
visit. But the tender little one was shorn from them and has gone home to dwell on the
bright shining shores of joy, free from suffering. [05/10/1877]

Died. In Richville, N.Y., 12 o'clock, Friday night, Nov. 2, 1877,
at Mr. Alexander Clark's (his son-in-law's), Deacon David Brown, aged 90 years, 5
months, and 15 days.
He was a native of New Hampshire and had been a resident in Richville some 30
years. Owing to extreme deafness his later years were lived comparitively alone, yet
not alone, for he walked with God. In his 22nd or 23rd year he embraced Christianity
and united with the Baptist Church in which he served as Deacon. He has written his
own epitaph, and surviving friends may read it with profit. Mature in years, rich in faith,
he came down to the evening of life's pilgrimage calmly and grandly, as a shock of corn
fully ripe for the harvest. His funeral was largely attended, Sunday afternoon, at 2
o'clock, following, showing the warm place he had in the hearts of his many friends.
Sermon by Rev. C.M. Booth from words selected by the Deacon in his life time, 'Weep
not for me but weep for yourselves, and for your children,' Luke 23d, 28. By this,
though dead, he yet speaks to surviving kindred.

Died. Bill. At Ogdensburg, on the 14th of April, 1876, Mrs.
James R. Bill, aged thirty-one years. The lady mentioned in the above paragraph came
with her husband to this city about two years since. Of beautiful appearance, of due
accomplishments and a frank hearty way, she in this short time had won a place in
many hearts. It is doubtful if any lady in so short a time had won so many friends. In
the early winter they commenced preparations for house keeping, and after having just
become settled, her husband was called to the death bed of his mother. Leaving his
wife on Monday morning in the best of health, he returned on Saturday noon to find her
a corpse. Mrs. Bill was taken on Thursday evening with a slight illness at a neighbor's
house but soon after, feeling better, she went to her own house, prepared for bed, and
went to sleep from which she never fully awakened. Kind friends and skillful physicians
were with her during the night, but no love, no care, could save her and she passed
away about half past six o'clock on Friday morning. As soon as possible telegrams
were despatched to her husband of her dangerous condition. He telegraphed back 'Is
my wife alive?'. Oh, the suspense and suffering of that fond husband as he waited for
the fatal answer, 'Your wife died this morning.' A long, long journey and such a meeting
was before him. So utterly changed from his former expectations. Reader! you may
imagine it, but you will never know anything about it until it is real to you. The
promising future, the sudden death and the abscence of her husband are of the many
distressing circumstances connected with the death of this estimable lady. The news
sent a thrill through the community. It did not seem possible that she whom they saw at
the openings Thursdays, whom they talked and laughed with, so full of enjoyment,
should be in the arms of death the next morning. It was too true. After beautiful flowers
had been strewn over her coffin by loving hands, after the man of God had spoken of
the departed sister's virtues and given all the comfort in his power to wounded hearts,
she was borne by sad relatives to her old home in Massachusetts to friends and
relatives who knew her longer and loved her better - there to be laid by the side of a
dear mother but just gone before, who in her last illnes received the care of a loving,
Christian daughter.

Gustavus N., son of Norman and Julia A. Mosher, in the fifth year of his age. [04/17/1876]
Died. Johnson. In Gouverneur, on the evening of the 14th
inst., Mrs. Olive M., wife of Chas. B. Johnson, Esq., in the fifty-fourth year of her age. [04/14/1876]
Died. Hardie. In Macomb, Thursday, April 13th, at eleven
o'clock, A.M., Mrs. Jennet Hardie, relict of the late Wm. Hardie, aged eighty-nine years.
She was born in Perth, Roxburgh county, Scotland, April 11th, 1787. Was married to
William Hardie, who died in Scotland, in Sept. 1855. In the year following her
husband's death, she took a farewell leave of her friends and sailed for America, and
while the national guns were joyously commemorating the remembrance of July 4th,
1776, the vessel in which she was a passenger sailed into New York harbor. Since her
arrival in America she has spent the principal part of the time with her daughter, Mrs.
Wm. Robinson, in Macomb, occasionally stopping for weeks at a time at her son's Mr.
James Hardie, of Gouverneur. Her son George Hardie, Esq., of Waukegan, Illinois,
arrived a few hours too late to see her in life. At the beginning of winter she began to
show signs of feebleness and has since gradually continued to fail. She was confined
to her bed the principal part of the time for several weeks preceding her death. As
death drew near she many times would say, 'The Lord's will be done. I am ready.' And
thus she died giving evidence to the last that Jesus was her all sufficient Saviour and
would sustain her in the trying hour of need. She died in peace- in the full assurance of
a glowing immortality beyond the grave. Not a shadow nor a doubt dimmed her bright
mission of the future world. The funeral services were held at the residence of Wm.
Robinson, Saturday, April 15th, at 10:00 A.M. Sermon delivered by the Rev. A. Adair,
of OxBow from Revelations, 11th Chap. 13th Verse. His words were fitting and
appropriately spoken, warning us well of our close proximity to death, the uncertainty of
life and the great need of a necessary preparation. [04/13/1876]
Died. Cowen. In the town of Utica, Seward county, Neb., Dec
9th, 1875, Mary, daughter of John and Ruaina Cowen, aged twenty nine years, one
month, and twenty-five days. Seven years ago the family moved west from the town of
Macomb, stopping for some time in Michigan but finally moving to Nebraska where they
(illegible) and have since resided. Through the merciful providence of God (illegible)
has been called home, away from the (illegible) of earth and (as her dying sentiment
expressed) to the happier regions of the blest. She died with the Christian's hope and
her last words were thanksgiving and praise.
Died. In Gouverneur, April 23d, 1876, Mrs. Ermina Sackett
Parker. The deceased was born in Washington County, this State, in 1796, and was at
her death seventy-nine years of age. She came to this section of the state early in life
as a teacher, became the wife of the late James Parker in 1819, with whom she lived
fifty-six years, he preceding her to the upper home by a little more than one year, and
as such wife became the mother of twelve children, eight of whom are still living. One
year before her marriage, Mrs. Parker became a member of the Presbyterian Church in
this place, in which communion she continued faithful until her death and was one of
that congregation of worshipers the last Sabbath she spent on earth. A devoted, Godly
and true mother in Isreal, loving and beloved, she has gone to her rest. Sweet and
precious the memories of such mothers in the home and in the church. Christ says of
such, 'Come ye blessed of My Father, inherit the rest prepared for you.'
Sudden Death. The death of Mr. Garrison, of Hailesborough,
on Sunday night the 26th was very sudden and the circumstances attending it strange
indeed. Sunday P.M. he was taken with a piercing pain in his stomach and at nine
o'clock Dr. Maclean was summoned. Thirty minutes later the Dr. was at his bedside
and Mr. Garrison was apparently well as ever, the pain having subsided. In a jocose
way, the old gentleman remarked to the doctor that his visit was a fruitless one; the
doctor replied that he might not be troubled any more and still he was very liable to be,
and commenced preparing him some medicine. A moment later he turned to Mr.
Garrison, and beheld him a corpse! [04/26/1876]

Died. The following lines are sacredly inscribed to the
memory of Andrew Fleming, who died Saturday morning, Nov. 24th, 1877. Written by
his old schoolmate, Geo. H. Robinson:
On the better shore he lingers, 'Neath the golden palm tree's shade, Where all beatific
visions, Swell the tide of heavenly grace. No more sorrows, no more trials, In that
blessed land of light, all is pure, untainted, Holy, Joy dispels the hour of night. There
amidst the joys of Heaven, With his Savior on the Throne, Sings the blessed Holy
Anthems, Praising God forever more. God in mercy still beholds us, All to Him who will
make known, How they suffer sinful anguish, Lovingly he bids them come. I have grace
and mercy plenty, Faith and love I'll freely give, Come up higher - Jesus calls you,
Come, Oh sinner come and live. Oh! Accept this proffered mercy, Freely offered to you
all; Join the band to Heaven marching, Grasp the standard lest you fall. Macomb,

tipping over a kettle of hot sugar. He was burned badly; we thought he couldn't live two
days but he was a poor little sufferer and only the one who hears the midnight plaint of
those who cry to Him for relief can tell how much he suffered. Everything that parents
could do was done; night and day they watched him with anxious care. Never can one
reflection be cast upon his parents. Amid pain, sorrow and tears they watched and
tended him till Death set its cold seal on his brow and numbered him with the sleeping
dead. Sad it will be, never to hear little Georgie's sweet voice again in the family circle,
but may the grace of God be sufficient for the afflicted family. Until the great life giver
speaks life to the dead, peace be to the little sleeper, and during all these years that
eye which never sleeps will watch his resting place. Entombed in earth thy precious
form is sleeping. While kindred hearts, who know thy worth, in anguish deep are
weeping.

In Memoria: Frank J. Jones. In the recent death of Frank J.
Jones, the second son of Rev. Reuben Jones, of Richville, N.Y., both the family and the
community received a severe shock, and it seems proper that a few facts appear in
defense of this poor unfortunate victim, who now fills an untimely grave because of a
combination of seductive influences that poisoned his young life, which influences are
still exerting a deadly power over the youth whose blood will be required at the hands
of others.
Deceased was born in Woodville, N.Y., Apr. 22, 1859, died June 6th, 1878, aged 19
years, 1 mo. and 14 days. His death occurred on his father's 70th birthday. Frankie
(as he was familiarly called) was a noble hearted young man, kind and obliging, and in
families where he had been employed was especially beloved because of his uniform
kindness to children. He scarcely ever missed going to church and Sunday school,
after he was old enough, until within the past two or three years. He was a stranger to
the many bad practices that so often overtake young men, until the contaminating
influences of the recent past. His parents, and especially his mother, had many times
cautioned him against the dangers of evil associations and had received from him
promises of amendment, but he was of that peculiar temperament, easily influenced by
his surroundings.
To show the better element of his nature, and as a revelation of his estimate of sin,
he told one of his intimate associates only a little time previous to his death: "If I
thought I had got to continue in this way I would rather be dead than alive."
His nature was so yielding he could not say "No!" and so he has gone down to death
thus early, kind hearted, with noble impulses and generous feelings; far more pure than
his surviving enemies who allured him into sin by the treachery and deceit of their
so-called legitimate business. The last Sunday he was at home his mother talked with
him on religious subjects and expressed to him her impression that there was soon to
be a change in their family. Frankie then expressed himself substantially as follows:
"Mother, when I am a Christian I shall live different from some who profess religion; I
know there is a reality in religion," and showed his appreciation of his mother's advice
by kissing her as he left. His mother had been deeply exercised with fearful
forebodings of evil and painful conjectures that some mishap would come to her "dear
Frankie" and that heart which has been full, is now overflowing with indescribable
sorrow. She wishes to say to unsuspecting mothers and tempted youth, "Stop, STOP,
before you too are drawn into the terrible vortex which has engulfed my son." And now
young men, Frankie's comrades, remember how this young life went out - profit by his
mistakes, and do not forget that evil communications corrupt good manners "therefore,
when sinners entice thee consent thou not."

Died. Gleason. In East Pitcairn, September 12, 1878, Mary,

In childhood her parents, Benjamin and Barbara (Whitford) Hall, removed to East
Pitcairn, being among the pioneers of the town. At the age of 17 she was married to
E.W. Gleason. As a wife and a mother she was tender and faithful; industry, order and
economy filled her house with comfort; she was amiable, cheerful and social, and loved
to show hospitality. A little over two years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Gleason celebrated their
silver wedding. The life was bright and hopeful; children and friends rejoiced with them
and anticipated for them a long and fair future. But alas! all these prospects are
darkened; all these hopes disappointed. For more than a year she suffered with a
painful and lingering disease, patiently and hopefully; but when hope departed she
resigned her will to God, fully supported by her faith in Christ professed in her younger
years. During her long illness neighbors and friends gave the most kind and
continuous sympathy and attention by her sick bed, which she gratefully received, and
in their memory she will be long and kindly cherished. To her family, the loss is
irreparable - to them the memory of her loving, useful life and peaceful death will be
most precious.

worse until her death, five days later. Georgianna was a beautiful girl. She bore her
suffering with wonderful patience, and received the intelligence that 'death was near'
with a calm resignation. Parents, cast thy sorrow from thee; Little Georgie is at rest;
Her last words, 'I'm coming, coming,' Tell thee she is with the blest.' The parents of the
