The men can be broadly put into four groups:
1) men who lived in SLC at the time of their service and spent the rest of their lives there
2) men who lived in SLC at the time of their service, but moved west soon after the war.
3) men who served while residents of some other place, but who moved into SLC and spent most of the rest of their lives there
4) men (or in some cases just their widows) who lived somewhere else at the time of their service, and lived only briefly in SLC
A quick inspection of the names reveals that there are far more men listed from the first half of the alphabet than from the second half. The reason for this lies in the nature of the index cards themselves. Whoever indexed the records in the 19th century started off with good intentions and put a lot of information for each soldier, including wife’s maiden name, date and place of marriage, date and place of death etc. However, after writing several thousand of these, the clerk or clerks began to leave out more and more of the genealogical information and began putting only the bare facts on the cards. By the letter "H", most cards only contain a man’s name and the name of his commanding officer, and some only refer to the state from which he served.
As a result, the index for the first four letters of the alphabet takes more pages than for all the men M-Z. The effect on this list was that any man who even lived for a while in SLC, as long as his last name began with an early letter in the alphabet, got mentioned. Those farther down the alphabet were only included when the name of their commanding officer was listed and happened to be a man recognized as a SLC militia officer. Otherwise, most of the men who served from other areas and moved into SLC at a later date are not mentioned in this list unless their last names began with A through perhaps G. There is some doubt as to whether the three Capt. Bunnells listed were all from SLC, or even that they are three separate individuals. However, men in their commands were listed and if it turns out that one of those officers was from another county, their soldiers can be deleted from this list. The same is true with the men from Castle’s company. Jonathan and Jabez Castle may have both been from SLC, but perhaps only Jonathan.
Be that as it may, this list still provides the pension numbers for 294 soldiers and those pensions usually contain a wealth of genealogical information. As of 1999, the War of 1812 pensions had not been microfilmed, so further research requires sending $10 to the National Archives and waiting to receive photocopies. The pension numbers beside each man must be used when ordering photocopies, or when in Washington looking up originals.
However, as mentioned before, over half of the men in this index do have the maiden name of their wives listed, and some of the index cards provide a brief outline of the soldier’s post war life. It was the inclusion of the early SLC marriage data that initially made this list seem like a worthwhile project. SLC (like most of the northern counties of NY) does not have a good collection of early birth , marriage and death information. Many of the pensions include copied pages from family Bibles listing children’s birthdates and may contain the names of relatives who also served or who were witnesses to the affidavits
