 St. John’s Episcopal Church
146 1st Street at Corner of Liberty Street
Troy , New York

West Facade

In 1830, a small group of parishioners who were disenchanted with the "high church" atmosphere of the Troy and Lansingburgh Episcopal churches, broke off and formed St. John's Episcopal Church. Rev. John A. Hicks became its minister in 1831. At first, the congregation purchased the old St. Paul's church before the present St. John’s building was built in 1853 at First and Liberty Streets.

Located at the corner of Liberty and First Streets in downtown Troy, St. John’s is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church was built of brown Connecticut stone in an English Gothic style. The nave can seat 450. In addition to the nave, the church building contains a narthex, a chime tower, sacristy, and a chancel with a handsome marble altar backed by carved stone reredos, and a chapel.

Its remarkable brownstone steeple, one of only a few left standing in the country, houses a splendid Meneely 11-bell chime and its Tiffany and other stained glass windows are amazing treasures to behold. Of particular interest is the window “Vision of the Holy City” a masterpiece created and built by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The “Vision” is five lancets, the largest over 24 feet high. It was completely restored over a three-year period and was reinstalled in December 2000.

Another Tiffany window, depicting the Resurrection, is the focal point above the altar.

An organ was installed in 1879, powered by a "water engine". It was largely paid for through contributions from Mrs. George M. Tibbits and Francis Mann. The chancel was enlarged in 1896 and a Tiffany window was given by Mary E. and F. Adelaide Gilbert. Mrs. & Mrs. Charles W. Tillinghast underwrote the conversion of the entryway to the chapel into a baptistry. Another Tiffany window was a memorial to Joseph B. Wilkinson by his wife. In 1898 a window was installed by Mrs. Knight in memory of her son Charles. After a fire in 1905, the church was again renovated and more windows installed. A memorial garden was dedicated in 1938.

Being close to the Hudson River, St. John's experienced many floods over the years, but managed each time to restore and rebuild the damage. The flood of 1913, which ravaged the city, also did great damage to the church and virtually destroyed its organ.

The Cluett family, whose shirt collar business later became the Arrow Shirt Company, restored the organ. Their efforts were gratefully received considering the importance of music to the parish. Other parishioners made contributions that are memorialized throughout the sanctuary. In the early 1900s, the parish, plagued with financial woes, was severely affected by World War I, losing many young men in the conflict.

St. John's has long-standing ties with area educational institutions. Emma Willard, a major figure in the movement to educate women, was an active and devoted member of the parish, as was Palmer C. Rickets, longtime Director of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the early 20th century. Mrs. Willard encouraged students at her Troy Female Seminary to attend St. John's Church, teach in the Sunday School and sing in the choir. The church's brownstone spire is dedicated to the memory of her niece, Jane Porter Lincoln, church organist and founder of St. John's music program.

On September 11, 1870,"... [Peter] McGoldrick of Albany played a concert of 15 tunes beginning with Changes on Eight Bells and including Old Hundred, Hail Columbia, Blue Bells of Scotland, Yankee Doodle, Last Rose of Summer, and ending with Home Sweet Home."* This was the first playing of the newly installed Meneely of West Troy (what we now know as Watervliet) chime of 11 bells in the tower of St. John's Episcopal Church.

Not much is known about that first chime, except that problems developed over time. In 1910-11, the bells were recast by the Meneely Bell Company of Troy, headed by Clinton H. Meneely. As each bell had been the gift of a different individual or group, the "new" bells bore the same inscriptions as did the bells in the original chime: 1. Judge Mann; 2. Miss Sarah B. Tibbits; 3. Sunday School; 4. Elizabeth Jermain, Isabel, and Walter Cox in memory of their brothers and sisters; 5. William A. Thompson in memory of Clarkson Crosby Thompson; 6. Norman B. Squires in memory of Mary W., Norman H., and Jeanie S. Squires; 7. Marie Kate Young and Jennie M. Sims; 8. Julia Louise Babcock; 9. Fannie Southwick Tillinghast; 10. Alice Griffith Tillinghast; and 11. Infant Class of 1870.

To give you some idea of the size of these bells, which reside some 50 ft. or so above street level, the largest bell probably weighs in the neighborhood of 3,500 lbs — as much as a mid-size car — and has a diameter of almost 5 ft. The smallest bell is probably closer to 350 lbs, about what two adult men would weigh, and is a bit less than 2 ft. in diameter. Ten of the bells are mounted in a square arrangement, bolted to a massive wood timber frame. The tenor bell looms above those others in its own mount.

NOTE: In 1868 St. John’s organized St. John’s Free Mission which eventually became the Church of the Ascension in Troy. This Church is also described in the data series Church Memorials and Family Names on the TIGS website.

The following Memorial Names that were found in St. John’s church were transcribed by TIGS volunteer Rebecca Rector.
