February 2006

TROY IRISH GENEALOGY SOCIETY
Troy, New York

The regular monthly meeting of the Troy Irish Genealogy Society was held on Thursday, February 16, 2006 at Holmes and Watson Restaurant in Troy, New York. The following individuals were in attendance:

Kris Ayotte
Kay Brearton
Jeanne Keefe
Lizette Strait

In the absence of the President, the meeting was called to order at 6:45 p.m. by Kris Ayotte, Vice President.

The minutes of the January meeting were approved and they have been posted to the TIGS website.

REPORTS

There were no reports from the President. There were no reports from the Vice President or Secretary.

Rick Shea, Treasurer, was unable to attend the meeting; however, he submitted his report that there are 42 paid members and $215 in the treasury. Rick has been unable to attend the last few meetings. Lizette Strait asked if there are two names on the account in the event that Rick is unavailable to sign checks. Kris Ayotte will look into the matter before the next meeting.

Jeanne Keefe, Webmaster, reported that a new photo has been placed on the website and she recommended that the photo be changed every two weeks. She has also put up a photo of Holmes and Watson as the current meeting place. Due to many work commitments she has been unable to do much work on the Marriage Index but will get back to it as soon as she is able. The members discussed the possibility of a scanning training session in the evening since the County Clerk’s Office is open one evening a week. It would allow more volunteers to help with the project.

Lizette Strait, List Administrator, reported there are currently 142 list members. The request for archiving is still on the schedule for the individual at Rootsweb who handles those requests.

OLD BUSINESS

It was agreed that it is too soon to pursue the Saturday NYS Library tour since the new director has just taken over her responsibilities there.

The agenda item regarding the new project “Representative Young Irish Americans of Troy” was tabled.

NEW BUSINESS

Kay Brearton checked on the Tiffany Stained Glass Window Tour. The next scheduled tour will be on Saturday, September 16, 2006.

Kris reminded the members that election of officers will take place in May and it will be necessary to form a nomination committee. An announcement will be posted on the list requesting volunteers to serve on the committee. Committee members do not have to live locally; membership on the committee is open to all members.

The members discussed the “Brick Wall” project and agreed that it would be a worthwhile undertaking for the Society. Guidelines for requests will be formulated.

OPEN GENEALOGY FORUM

Kris shared a newspaper article from the Albany Times Union sent to her by Donna Vaughn regarding a proposal to utilize a 50 acre site adjacent to Oakwood Cemetery to create a park that would have spectacular views of the Adirondacks, the Hudson River, the Erie Canal and the Catskills. The author of the article, David Sampson, suggested that creating such a park might make funds available to maintain the cemetery.

The next meeting will be a St. Paddy’s Day Potluck meeting on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Donna Vaughn. Information will be posted on the website.

Jeanne Keefe distributed information about the Ballykilcline Society Reunion scheduled from June 25 to June 27 in Albany and Rutland VT. Jeanne has been invited to speak at the brunch on Monday, June 26 at the Holiday Inn Turf in Albany.

ADJOURNMENT

A motion was made by Lizette Strait and seconded by Jeanne Keefe to adjourn the meeting. The motion was approved and the meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted,

Kathleen Brearton, Secretary
