For the purposes of this directory, and web site in general, "upstate New York" means that portion of the state of New York that lies outside of New York City and its suburbs, which means most of the state. St. David's Welsh Society of the Capital District Offers a variety of activities: Welsh language instruction, hymn study, special programs and concerts, annual gymanfa ganu, newsletter, monthly meetings and refreshments, web page. Membership dues: $10 per adult per society year, which runs from March 1st through February 29th. Email: welsh@dragonflower.com Welsh Society of the Southern Tier Membership area covers southern New York and northern Pennsylvania. This group has 6 meetings a year, including a St David's Day Banquet and a Gymanfa Ganu. Regular meetings include talks, slide lectures, food. Special events: Christmas, St. David's Day and June picnic. Meets at East Side Congregational Church, Robinson Street, Binghamton. St. David's Society of Greater Buffalo Meets 3rd Sun. of the month, Sept.-May, Delaware Ave. Baptist Church, Delaware & Utica, Buffalo, NY. Picnics, gymanfa, Welsh classes, St. David's Day celebration. Contact: 108 Hamilton Dr., Snyder, NY 14226 Salem Welsh Church and Cemetery This is the only Welsh church still standing in western New York. In 1995 it was listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Originally Welsh Calvinistic Methodist, Salem was built in 1855. Activities include: newsletter, annual worship service (The White Service) held the 1st Sunday in June. Records available. Hudson Valley Welsh Society The Hudson Valley Welsh Society is a loose knit group of people of Welsh descent or ancestry living in the Hudson River Valley of upstate New York. They meet three or four times a year to share meals, conversation, cultural events and fun times. Some of their meetings are held in or around Newburgh, NY. They also have an online forum at Yahoo Groups. Remsen-Steuben Historical Society While not a Welsh organization, the Welsh have a very strong presence in RSHS. The Remsen-Steuben district of Oneida county was the site of major Welsh settlement in the nineteenth century. The society maintains several historic Welsh churches including its headquarters at the Stone Church which houses a library-archives-museum. A Heritage Park is in the works. The society published Remsen-Steuben Cemetery Burial Lists and Index which is available for purchase. They do not currently have a web site but are working on it. Contact: 1200 Severn Ridge, Webster NY 14580. The Poultney Area St. David's Society Preserves Welsh culture and history in the Slate Valley area of Vermont and New York. Granville and Middle Granville, NY are located within the Slate Valley Area. See also Slate Valley Museum. St. David's Society of Utica A very active group covering all of Oneida County; sponsors picnics, gymanfa ganu, potlucks, St. David's Day Banquet, special events, concerts, historic churches. Membership is free and open to anyone with Welsh connections and ancestry in upstate New York. Members come from various US states, Canada and the UK. Activities include group web page, posting and reading group messages, online chats on various topics, sharing documents, photographs and links. Membership information
