Salem Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church
Route 98 and Galen Hill Road, Freedom, Cattaraugus County, New York
The Welsh Calvinistic Methodists formed a congregation in the Centerville Hills in Allegany County about 1850-51. A few years later they re-located their meetings to Cattaraugus County at the Sandbank Schoolhouse. In 1855 they formally organized as the Salem Welsh Calvinistic Church. Construction on a modest Greek Revival chapel was begun in 1854 and completed in 1855. A cemetery shares the lot. The church building has changed little over the years except for occasional redecorating. In 1995 this historic church was placed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. It's official Register name is "Salem Welsh Church." Salem is the last standing Welsh church in western New York. The church holds an annual service the first Sunday in June.
