Loyalists were those colonials who remained loyal to the English crown during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, their land and property were confiscated by the new republic's government and they fled to Canada or returned to England.

Some loyalists later made legal claims for compensation for the lost land and property in the States or made claims for land in Canada. Some records of such claims can be found at the New York Public Library and at the Public Record Office in London, England and microfilmed copies are available through your local Family History Center and elsewhere.

Some Loyalist information can also be found at the Tryon County's NYGenWeb site. Researchers might also look at Albany County to which Tryon belonged just prior to the Revolutionary War as well as look at Herkimer and Montgomery Counties from which people reportedly left for Ontario, Canada, after the Revolutionary War.

For an explanation of "What is a Loyalist? The American Revolution as civil war", see the explanation given by Edward Larkin, an assistant professor of English at the University of Delaware.
