Auckland Towns & Cities

• A list of current towns & cities within Auckland.

Road, City & Street Directories:

• The New Zealand Automobile Association has good detailed road maps, city maps & street directories for the whole of NZ.

• Most petrol service stations within New Zealand sell detailed road maps, or have a stand available beside the counter with road maps for the area you require.

• If you get lost in Auckland, usually the local dairy (shop, or drugstore) has a map at the counter, and very friendly service people too!

Bookshops

Bookshops such as Whitcoulls(TM), Barnaby's(TM), London Bookshop's(TM), etc., have detailed maps of city and rural streets for the whole of NZ.

Business Services

• The Land & Survey Department of the NZ Government was sold to Land Information New Zealand, who have an LINZ place names database available for the whole of NZ. LINZ also has information on current electoral boundaries, survey records, easements, registrations, transfer, land survey, mining index, and ownership.
• The Crown Purchase Series is a current cadastrel series updated and annotated with confiscation boundaries and some Old Land Purchases and Compensation Court awards.

Libraries

A list of University of Auckland Historical Maps 1847-.

Auckland University - Geographic Library:

• The large scale cadastrel maps or Public Counter Record Map Index cover North Cape to Mercer. These contain a list of parishes (a.k.a. administrative units / survey district) names, with a Parish Locator in the front listing parishes alphabetically with a survey block reference. Ask the staff for the Index to Maori Blocks (maori land), or the Parish Register (european land). Blocks/parishes are listed alphabetically, and include survey plans and plans for each allotment. They are in chronological order, with the lower numbers representing earlier plans.

• There is a list of early general maps at the Puna Korero Whenua. Among the holdings are the Roll Plans, 6 maps put out about 1860, which show all surveys to that date for the whole of North Auckland.

• Black and white photocopies of all these maps and others can be bought from the University of Auckland's Geographic Library.
