Timaru Herald, 15 February 1875, Page 3 The fatal accident at the Ranigata
On the afternoon of Saturday, February 6th, an inquest was held at the Resident Magistrate's Court office, Timaru, touching the death of James Francis Leigh Hunt, Catherine Hunt, and Eliza Cunningham, before B. Woollcombe, Esq., Coroner, and the following jury: Messrs Tate (foremam), Blanchett. J. Shepherd, M. White, J. Gedye, C. Wood. E. S. Lough, John King, Robert Tank, F. A. Sims, F. J. Wilson, J. Davidson, T. Rowley, and J. Smith: Deep interest; was manifested m the enquiry, the body of the Court being full o£ people. The examination being conducted by Inspector Pender : Charles Wragg being called, the Coroner said that as a criminal charge might be brought against him, he thought it proper to caution him that he need not answer any question that would be likely to criminate him. The witness hen deposed: I am a laborer residing at Coppin's, Lower Rangitata. On Thursday last, an about nine o'clock in the morning, I saw a smoke on the south side of the river. As soon as I could get my horse, which was being used down the river-bed after cattle I crossed the river and went towards the smoke. When I got to the south side I found a buggy with two horses, three people being with the buggy, the gentleman, and two ladies.
James Hutchison Sutter : I am a merchant, living at Timaru, I have seen the bodies lying in the late Mr Hunt's house.
Walter Fuller : I am a contractor living at the Orari. On the 4th of February I was travelling between the Ashburton and the Orari. I arrived at Mr Coppin's, Rangitata, at about a quarter past eight in the morning. I was travelling in a two wheeled spring trap. I did not see Wragg there, and crossed the river by myself. The river was very low. I had no difficulty in crossing. I went Over by the down stream ford, which is above the telegraph poles. I have crossed the river from south to north by the same ford. In going north I generally cross by a ford half or three-quarters of a mile above the telegraph poles. The day after the accident I crossed the river, going north by the ford which was between where I saw the buggy wheels and where the hood was lying. The ford was an easy one, the deepest place not being more than two feet six inches. When I crossed the river from the north, on the 4th instant, I met a buggy containing a man and two ladies. They were within a few chains of the main stream. The buggy was driven to the spot where I came out of the water, and the same place that I went into the water next day. The buggy was a low one, and I believe it had yellow wheels. There is no doubt that it was the same buggy that I saw on the following day in the river. The man in the buggy, when I met him on the 4th, asked me if the ford was safe. I replied that it was if he knew it. I cautioned him not to enter the river with his small low buggy. He said what shall I do for a ferryman. I replied light a fire in the tussocks. He said, " will the ferryman come for a fire." I replied if he does not you had better go round to the bridge, or wait till the coach comes. I saw him light a fire, and the smoke rising from it, after I had got about three miles this side of the buggy. I did not consider the buggy was a safe one to cross the river with.
James Kennedy : I am a constable of police station at Geraldine. I was at the lower ford, Rangitata river, on the 5th of February, and also yesterday. I made a tracing of the river (produced). I am an engineer by profession. Constable Wildermoth, Mr Compton, and Fetor, a German, were with me when I made the plan. I have marked the different places in the tracing pointed out as being in connection with the accident.
William De Blaquerie Compton : I am ferryman at the Rangitata. I have been at the ferry since the fifth. I have had experience in ferrying at the Rakaia. I have been at the Rakaia about twelve years. The Rangitata and Rakaia are similar. I have received an appointment lately from the Provincial Government as ferryman at the Rangitata. The duty of a ferryman is to guide people across the river. The usual plan is to guide them on horseback. I came to take charge of the ferry on Monday, the 1st of February but did not because Coppin said that his time was not up, but that he might be out on Friday. I returned to Christchurch, and came back to the Rangitata to take the ferry with further authority on Friday. I saw Wragg at the ferry on that day. I crossed the river in the evening in a waggon in company with Wragg, and he pointed out where the accident happened on the south side of the stream. When half way across the river and while in the waggon Wragg pointed out where he went into the stream with the buggy, and where the horses stopped to drink. I understood him to say that when the horses stopped to drink, the deceased ladies stood up on the lower side of the buggy ; also that he intended to take the buggy out of the stream on the opposite bank.
Edward Johnson : I am a carter between Temuka and the north side of the Rangitata. I am in the habit of crossing the Rangitata with a timber waggon six times a week. I cross the river by the lower ford. Wragg pointed out to me where he crossed. 1 crossed the river a day before the accident. I went northwards over the river, and returned on the same day. I also crossed and re-crossed on the day after the accident. The river was low each time. Crossing from the south side I should think the water was about three feet to three feet six deep. Sometimes I cross and recross by the ford above the telegraph poles, but the last time I crossed from the south side I went by way of the lower ford.
John Wildermoth : I am a constable of police, stationed at Temuka. Wragg came to me on the 4th of February to report an accident in the Rangitata. He said that a gentleman and two ladies had been drowned in the Rangitata, at about 9 o'clock that morning. He said that he thought the drowned people were Mr Cunningham from Port Lyttelton, his wife, and her mother. I went with Charles Wragg to the Rangitata.
Dr Hammond said : I have examined the bodies of the deceased persons.
Verdict "That the deceased, James Francis Leigh Hunt, Catherine Hunt and Eliza Cunningham, were accidentally drowned in the Rangitata river, on Thursday, the 4th day of February, 1875." Rider-" That Wragg, the ferryman, was guilty of great indiscretion in crossing the up-stream ford ; in not taking the management of the horses, when he saw there was danger, and in attempting to take Mr Hunt out on the up-stream side of his horse." The body of the court was full of people 'daring the enquiry, and numbers had assembled when the verdict; was read out by the Coroner.

Walter Spain, a labourer at Pighunting Creek, said that on the 27th of May last he saw a man riding from the south along the Great South road towards Pighunting creek. He stopped him about three chains from where the bridge on the road had originally stood. The old bridge had been removed to be replaced by a stone bridge. He told the rider that he would show him the ford over the creek. The rider urged his horse away from him saying he was in a hurry. Heard a splash and the horse was standing without the rider. William Smith, a labourer at Pighunting Creek, said on Thursday evening last, rode to Mr Fulton of Sportman's Arms, Saltwater Creek, to report the accident.

The poor girl was employed as nursemaid to Mrs G. Beatty, of the Q.C.E. Hotel, and had been to the Gardens with four young children, and carried a baby in her arms. About half-past 2 o'clock she was approaching the crossing from the footpath to Cathedral Square, opposite Hobbs and Co's corner, when two cabs -one driven by a man named DeGersey, and the other by C. Crease - which had been standing on the west side of the square, and had been hailed by some person in front of Warner's Hotel, drove furiously towards the crossing, but before they reached it they cannoned against each other. The girl saw the danger and tried to react, but before she could do so the off shaft of the cab struck her on the shoulder, turned her around, knocked the baby out of her arms, and threw her down, and one wheel passed over her right side of her neck and face. Fatal Accident at Waimate
The Timaru Herald Aug. 2 1875
Last Friday John Henry Ritter and William Hens, Germans, who resided at Waimate bush, were out shooting early on the morning named. While the men were walking along endeavouring to get a shot at some ducks, Ritter, who had had his gun at full cock, tried to lay the hammer down carefully. While trying to do this, however, the hammer slipped through his fingers, and discharged the gun, the contents entering the head of Hens, who was close by, killing him instantly. The police were informed of the occurrence and when Sergt. O'Connor and Constable Gilchrist, who were accompanied by Dr Dunkley, arrived at the scene of the accident, they found Ritter in a state of anguish, embracing the body of his dead comrade. The body of the deceased was conveyed to the club Hotel, to await the Coroner's inquest, and Ritter was taken into custody. Verdict: Accidentally killed by a gunshot wound by Ritter. Ritter was therefore discharged from custody.
