A three-year old boy boy named John Cook, whose parents live in a house
off the Main road opposite the Parsons and Henderson's old foundry, died
suddenly on Saturday morning, and an inquest was held on the body at the
Melville Hotel. J.S. Beswick, Esq., coroner for the district, presided and a
jury, of whom Mr John King was chosen foreman, was sworn in.
May Cook, mother of the deceased child, said that her son had lately been
suffering from diarrhoea. On Saturday morning the child was in its father's
bedroom, and the father told witness to bring some water as the deceased had
drank some sheep dip which had been in a bottle lying on the floor. Witness got
the water and gave it to the child who then fell sick. Witness then took the boy
to Dr MacIntyre's who gave him a powder, and promised to call at noon. At 11
o'clock however, the child got worse, and died just as Dr Lovegrove, who had
been sent for by a neighbour arrived. The sheep dip had been in the house 18
months; had been used on two puppies, which had die from the effects of it. Dr
Lovegrove made a pot-mortem examination and attributed the cause of death to a
severe attack of diarrhoea. There was no indication of the child having an
irritant poison. The jury at once returned a verdict of "Death from natural
causes."
Tuesday 4 January 1887
Fatal Accident occurred near Waimate on Saturday last. On that day Mr Peter
Manson and Mr J. Graham were riding from Waihao Forks to the Waimate Station. Mr
Mason galloped ahead through the Waimate Gorge. Graham found him lying on the
road insensible having evidently fallen from his horse. Mr George Freeman
arrived soon after, coming from Waimate with his buggy, in which the injured man
was conveyed by Mr Freeman to The Hospital. Dr Stacpool was almost immediately
in attendence. The injuries proved fatal Sunday morning. An inquest was held.
Manson has been long engaged as head shepherd on the Waimate station where he
has always been regarded with confidence by his employer.

Wednesday January 1887 pg 3
Inquest at Waimate Hospital before J.S. Beswick, Esq., coroner, as to the death
of Peter Manson.
The following jury were sworn in: Messrs F. Jones, J. Harrison, T. Maginn, H.
Franklin, D. Mitchell and J. Sinclair (foreman).
From the evidence of Jno. Graham, shepherd, Donald Macpherson, hotelkeeper,
Waihao Forks, and Dr Stacpoole, hospital surgeon, it appeared that deceased, who
was the head shepherd at the Waimate station, in the company of Graham was
engaged during the forenoon of the 1st instant mustering sheep on the Hunter's
range. On their way to the station deceased and Graham arrived at the Waihao
Forks, where they had four drinks, deceased taking schnapps each time, after
which he had taken tea, and started about 5 p.m. for Waimate with Graham.
Verdict of accidental death caused by fall from his horse.

Wednesday 14 September 1887 pg 2
Though not of the first four ships, Mr Burgess may fairly be reckoned among the
"Pilgrims," for he came to New Zealand with his father's family in the
Lady Nugent in 1852. Coming to Timaru in '58, he very soon after
went to reside at Grey's Hills, Mackenzie County. From then to the present time
he has been uninterruptedly connected with the Mackenzie. He took the first load
of wool with a bullock dray from Glenmore station, being the first from that
part of the country. He was for a number of years proprietor of the Burke's Pass
Hotel. He as for some years a mail contractor, and for a long period had bullock
teams in the road. It will be seen from the above sketch the Mr Burgess took
part in all the struggles of the early settlers. He was known to all as a warm
friend and an honourable, straightforward man, and he has left behind him many a
record of his kindly disposition and self-sacrificing unselfishness.

A fatal accident occurred on Saturday afternoon to a man named William Green, in
the employ of Mr W. Gosling, of Mt. Horrible. It appears that while somewhat
under the influence of liquor, he was taking a dray with two horses along the
Mount Horrible road, and on nearing a part of the road at which a man named
Lewis was employed by Mr Fulbert Archer to cut grass, he attempted to get into
the dray by jumping on a shaft. He missed his footing, and fell under the dray,
a wheel of which passed over him. James Lewis ran to his assistance and obtained
aid of Mr Ogden. Dr Ewart found he had sustained a fracture of the leg, rupture
of the bladder and bruising. The man sank rapidly. Inquest will be held at the
