William MOODY, of the firm of MOODY and ZIESLER, was found drowned in Pig-hunting creek, five miles to the south of Timaru, at 5 o'clock this evening. Nothing is known as to how the deceased got into the creek.
Timaru Herald, 14 May 1888, Page 2
The remains of the late Mr W. Moody were consigned to their last earthly resting place in the Timaru Cemetery on Saturday afternoon. The funeral cortege started from the residence, Burnbank, some eight miles south of Timaru, about one o'clock and walking all the way reached the cemetery about three. The hoarse was followed by over forty vehicles and a dozen horsemen, forming a procession that stretched half way across the Saltwater Creek Valley. At the top of the hill it was joined by some fifty persons on foot, most of whom had waited since two o'clock the arrival of the party from Kingsdown, and about as many more were waiting about the cemetery. Had the afternoon been a fine one instead of the damp and drizzly one it was, doubtless the attendance would have been very much larger. The vehicles wore were nearly all fully occupied, by persons representing every local interest. Business men and settlers from a considerable radius were present and a better proof of the universal popularity of the deceased as a neighbour and man of business, could hardly have been given than the constitution of this largo body of mourners. The Rev. W. Gillies performed the service at the grave, which is just at the back of that of Captain Watt, on the western side of the cemetery. Mr J. B. Beekingham was the undertaker.Timaru Herald, 2 June 1888, Page 2
