years master of the public school at Temuka, will regret to hear that he died on
the 15th of last month in the Napier Hospital, from Bright's disease. Though he
had left Temuka for more than fifteen years, there are many by whom he is still
held in very kindly remembrance, especially members of the English Church, with
which he was intimately connected, did good work as lay-reader, superintendent
of the Sunday School, and choirmaster, the first choir of St. Saviour's Church
having been formed and trained by him. Nor were his services confined to the

Monday 8 April 1889 pg3
The funeral of the late Mr John Hayhurst, one of the pioneers of South
Canterbury, took place at Temuka yesterday afternoon, and was attended by a very
large number of people from all parts of the district. Mr Hayhurst's death was
rather unexpected, his illness being a brief one. Mr Hayhurst was born near
Preston, Lancashire, England, and came to this colony at an early age. After a
short stay in the North Island he came to South Canterbury, where, after a
varied experience with station property, he finally settled down on the estate
of Green Hayes. On this land Mr Hayhurst inaugurated a system of small farms,
and was so successful in it, that at present there are nearly 250 people living
on the estate. Energetic in every way, a kindly landlord, he set a very
praiseworthy example to his many tenants, to whom and many others, he was ever
ready to lend a helping hand. It was in 1861 that he took up Green Hays, and
from the outset he mapped out such a comprehensive scheme of improvement, that
the estate is now spoken of as the finest in the colony. Mr Hayhurst at one time
sat in the Provincial Council, and on the Timaru and Gladstone Boards of Works.
He was a Liberal in politics, and in 1876 contested the Gladstone seat against
Mr Edward Wakefield, the voting resulting in a tie, the returning officer then
giving his casting vote in favour of Mr Wakefield. Mr Hayhurst was a keen
traveller, and of late years had visited England, America and other countries.
By his death the Temuka district has suffered a severe loss and such sympathy is
extended to his son (Mr J.T. M. Hayhurst), and relatives in this district, by a
large circle of friend.

of forty-nine. Mr Totton, although comparatively a stranger in the Waikato, was

Canterbury, the well-known Lee family. He then took the management of the
Coldstream run, owned by the Hon. Ernest Gray, the present owner of Freshfiled,
Taupiri. Upon the of the run to the Messrs Studholme, he went to the Thames
goldfields. He then went to try his fortune in Fiji, from thence to Australia
and next to England, in which latter place he was presented with the freedom of
the City of London, through being a member of the Mercer's Company. He returned
to New Zealand in 1875, and in the following year married the eldest daughter of
Mr C. K. Boakrudge of Parnell, and soon afterwards returned to Canterbury, where
he lived, and was engaged up to within a short time of his death in
