He was born in 1828, and when about 16 years he left home and made his way to New South Wales, and soon after to New Zealand. He worked some years in the bush in the North Island, and when the Canterbury settlement was formed he came down and his few years of "Colonial experience" already obtained stool him in good stead among the new arrivals. He worked some time on the Peninsula, then worked in Christchurch as a blacksmith for Mr W. Gosling, now of Coonoor, near Timaru. While on the Peninsula he was joined by the lady who afterwards shared all his fortunes, and whom he afterwards married, on the death of her husband. His next change of scene and occupation was a fortunate one. He took charge of Sir Thomas Tancred's run on the Ashburton, "on thirds," and succeeded so well that he was presently able to purchase the run. The homestead was situated about three miles above the present thriving town of Ashburton, and before the erection of an accommodation house on the river bank, travellers made "Hayhurst's" as a stopping place on the up or down journey. Mr Hayhurst next took up a run in the Mackenzie Country, the Grey's Hills and Simons Pass stations, and then commenced the purchase of the Green-hayes freehold, where he erected the first flour mill in South Canterbury, a structure which gave the familiar name to the adjacent crossing of the Opihi, and the surrounding district - Mill-ford. In 1859 Mr and Mrs Hayhurst visited the Old Country, and while they were there were married at Manchester. Their only surviving child, now Mr J.T. M. Hayhurst, was born on the return voyage. Mr Hayhurst afterwards made several visits to the Old Country, sometimes via America and the lady who has taken so prominent a part in the present sensational proceedings claims we understand, to have been legally married to him, during one of these visits, and that he was the father of her two children now eight and nine years old. On his death bed he requested his nurse, Mrs Copestake, an intimate friend of the family, to write to "Mrs Hayhurst" in England, telling her he had missed the boat through his illness, but he would go Home by the next one.North Otago Times, 21 July 1891, Page 3
A case which has for some time past excited interest in South Canterbury will come prominently before the public on Tuesday next at Temuka (says the Christchurch Press) when an inquest will be held an the body of a well known resident who died some years ago. The facts of the case, briefly stated, are as follows : Some time ago the gentleman in question went home to England on a trip, leaving his wife and family in Temuka. Whilst at Home he formed a connection with another lady, who alleges that a marriage took place, and remained in England for some years, during which two children were born. During his absence his estate was managed by his son in New Zealand. Subsequently he returned to the colony, and after some time spent in Temuka, announced his intention of returning to England. Some two or three days before the time fixed for his leaving the colony he was taken ill, and despite the skill of his medical attendant he died. At the time of his death he was possessed of very considerable property, which by a will dated some years prior to his death, was bequeathed to his wife and son in Temuka. Being a very old colonist and a man of considerable local importance, an obituary notice appeared in the local newspaper. This was sent home to the lady in England, who shortly afterwards came out to the colony. From some alleged circumstances attendant upon the decease the lady from England made representations to the Government with a view to an enquiry being held, which has been granted, and the exhumation of the body has been ordered and the inquest fixed for Tuesday next. The Lyttelton Times gives the following particulars of the deceased: John Hayhurst was a Manchester mail, and was born in 1828, his father being a farmer. When about 16 years old his energetic nature led him to seek his fortune in Australia. He was poor but plucky, and it is said that he reached the land of his desire by stowing away on a ship bound for Sydney. On arriving in New South Wales he was soon at work — he took the first work offered him — but after a few months decided to come to New Zealand. He did so, and spent some years working in the bush in the North Island. What he did he did with his might, and he kept his eyes very widely open for any chance of improving himself. He thought he saw one in Canterbury when the first four ships arrived at Lyttelton. To Canterbury he came, and took a contract to cut timber from the bush and make wheelbarrows for the contractors for the Sumner road. After this he took to bush work on Banks Peninsula, and while there he met the lady who, on the death of her first husband, became his wife. From the Peninsula he went to Christchurch, where, with Mr W. Gosling, now a resident of Timaru, he worked in the old Market Place smithy. His mechanical talents, it may be said, were equal to his energy and foresight, and this happy combination of characteristics rendered him admirably fitted to fight the battle of life in the new country. While in Christchurch there happened an event which marked the turning point in his life. Sir Thomas Tancred engaged Mr and Mrs Hayhurst as married couple on his station at Ashburton. Here his energy and ability asserted themselves in a congenial field ; he proved "the right man in the right place," and rose so rapidly in the estimation of his employer and in wealth that Sir Thomas, on leaving Canterbury for a trip Home, sold him the station on terms. His affairs now prospered exceedingly ; he became sole owner of the station on which he had been employed ; and he obtained land in the Mackenzie Country and about Temuka. After many successful ventures he settled down at the latter place, added to his possessions there, and formed the well-known Greenhayes estate, which, it has been said, has an annual rent roll of some L5000. Early in 1859 Mr and Mrs Hayhurst paid a visit to the Old Country. Up to this time, it may be remarked, none of their children had lived longer than a few months. In September, 1860, they left England on their return voyage in the Chile, Captain Turnbull, Mrs Hayhurst bringing a Miss Murray with her as a companion. During the voyage, on November 16, Mrs Hayhurrt bore a son. He was christened John Turnbull Murray Hayhurst, and is the present owner of the Greenhayes estate. For several years Mr Hayhurst worked hard on his property at Greenhayes. He then, with his wife and son, paid a short visit to England. A few years later they made another trip, and his son was left in the Old Country to be educated. Some time later Mr Hayhurst went to England alone. He then spent several years away from the colony, which, however, he visited at intervals. His last return was in 1888. He applied himself with his usual energy to managing the affairs of his large property, and in the early part of 1889 he was engaged in superintending the erection of a grain store at Temuka, and of a mill, which had been removed from Milford to the Temuka river. Several times stood waist deep in the water directing the operations, and is supposed to have received a chill which had fatal results. At all events he was taken suddenly ill on Monday, April 1 ; next day it was announced that he was very bad ; on the Thursday it was reported that he was slightly better ; but on the Friday he died, at the age of 61 years. He was attended by Dr J. S. Hayes, who gave a certificate stating the cause of death to have been uraemia, the duration of his last illness five days, that he had been last seen by his medical attendant on April 5, the day on which he died. The certificate gives the further information that the deceased was married at Manchester at the age of 32 years, to Jane Startup, and that his surviving issue was one son, 28 years of ago. Mr Hayhurst's funeral took place on Sunday, April 7. 1889, and started from his house on the Main Road, Temuka, where he had been living with his wife. His son, who had married a few years before his father's death, lived in the meantime on the Greenhayes estate, and in course of time took possession of the property under a will signed some years previously. Last year the now owner of the estate was unpleasantly surprised by the arrival, from England, of a lady who claimed to be the legal wife of the late Mr Hayhurst, and asserted that he was the father of two children...

TIMARU. October 9.
Timaru has sustained a loss by the death of Mr Thomas O'Driscoll, proprietor of the Hibernian Hotel. Deceased was highly respected, and noted for his charitable disposition. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church, and one of its chief supporters here. His only daughter died in Sydney a few weeks since, and the loss preyed on his mind and a painful and fatal illness supervened.
New Zealand Tablet, 16 October 1891, Page 18
Mr O'Driscoll was born in the village of Ash Hill in the parish of Ballymacelligott, County Kerry, on the 1st April, 1838, and arrived in New Zealand on the 31st December, 1865. His eldest brother Matthew emigrated to New Zealand a few years previous to that date, and it was on his recommendation he came out here. After arriving he went through the usual knocking about, — working at fencing, ploughing, etc— and in 1871 he married Mrs O'Driscoll, then the widow of the late Mr Michael Gerity. He built the Hibernian Hotel that year, and in those days buildings of any dimensions were so rare in Timaru that the old Hibernian was considered a first-class building. He conducted the hotel for the last twenty years, and has left a name here as a hotel keeper which will never be forgotten. Even in the licensing election, at a meeting of the Prohibitionists in the theatre, the Rev W. Gillies alluded to him as the only publican he knew of who could honestly say that he never took a shilling from an intoxicated man or supplied him, and as one who never resorted to any means or inducements to entice anybody to spend their money with him. He leaves a widow, one older brother, Matthew, and three younger ones, one of whom is at Home (Patrick), a prominent land leaguer. He died worth a considerable sum of money, the bulk of which is left to his widow, and the remainder divided amongst relations and friends, the claims of religion not being forgotten, On Saturday the Most Rev. Dr Grimes feelingly referred to his death, and told how, when he arrived in Wellington, the first person he met was Mrs O'Driscoll, who had just received a telegram not to proceed to Sydney, where she was going, as her daughter was dead. Mrs O'Driscoll and the Bishop came down in the same steamer. His Lordship also said how he missed Mr O'Driscoll, who was always one of the first to welcome him whenever he visited Timaru. The congregation (the church being crowded) were moved to tears on the Bishop's reference to his life and his numerous acts of charity. The funeral was the largest ever seen in Timaru. He was buried next his sister, who died two years ago, and strange to say from the same complaint, which was also the one that carried off his daughter." From the Timaru Herald we take the following testimony : — "The deceased was greatly respected and liked by a very large circle of people in South Canterbury. His generosity was unbounded, and among many of the poorer of the community in Timaru, his free hand will be greatly missed. He was a very hearty supporter of the Timaru Hospital, and though of a retiring disposition, was ever ready to extend his sympathy and bounty to any deserving cause." For our own part we have lost in Mr O'Driscoll the kind and consistent friend of many years. He was a staunch supporter of the N Z. Tablet, and we ever knew him as foremost in every good work. — Requiescat in pace.Tuesday 13 October 1891 Birth
