PASSENGERS:
Mr and Mrs JOHN MEIKLE, of Timaru were passengers by the
ss AUSTRALIA, which left London in November and reached
Albany last week. Mr and Mrs F. W. DONKIN and Family were also passengers for
Timaru, by the steamer BALLARAT, which sailed on November 11th.

INQUEST:
For WILLIAM GAITT, of Waimate, a farmer, who was found in an unconscious state

JOHN WALLACE. Farmer, Pleasant Valley, Geraldine District, aged 28, son of Mr
Joseph Wallace. Found hanging from a branch of a gum tree. Inquest held at Bush
Hotel, Geraldine, on Saturday afternoon last before Mr H.W. Moore, the acting
coroner and a jury of six, of whom Mr N. Dunlop was foreman. Verdict, death by
hanging during a fit of temporary insanity supposed to be caused through a fall

A distressing accident occurred to an expressman named George Fox, residing at
Geraldine, late on Friday afternoon. He was taking a load of travellers' luggage
to the railway station from the township, and sitting on top of one of the
cases, which was a large one, when near the stone bridge, on the Geraldine road,
the case shifted and threw Mr Fox off on to the hard road The case full off at
the same time, jamming his head, and one of the corners forced its way into the
skull a little above the eye at the side. A trap was immediately procured, help
being close at hand, and the injured man was released from his dangerous
position and speedily conveyed to his house in the township. Dr Fish was sent
for, and dressed the wound. The neighbours attended to him during the night. The
doctor gave very little hope of his recovery, but the sufferer was somewhat
easier during Saturday.

We publish this morning the funeral notice of the late Mr John Fraser. Mr Fraser
was one of the earliest settlers in South Canterbury, and was well and
favourably known by a large circle of friends. He landed in Nelson from one of
the first ships to the colonies in 1841, and after a stay there of about ten
years went to Marlborough, and then on to South Canterbury. He was among the
first to settle in the Mackenzie Country, he and his son being principally
interested in the Mount Cook, Black Forest and Braemar stations. The old
gentleman had lively experiences in those early days, and had seen the district
become settle, the railway built to Point, Albury and Fairlie, and the district
he had made his home in become one of the most sought after from a traveller's
point of view in the colony; On leaving the Mackenzie Country some time ago, Mr
Fraser settled at Pleasant Point, being principally engaged in cattle dealing.
It is in the cemetery at this township that his remains will be laid to rest
this afternoon.

New Plymouth - death of an old settler - KING -Mr Thomas King, Chairman of the
harbour Board, died at 4 o 'clock this morning, aged 73 years. He was one of the
first settlers, arriving here on the William Bryant in 1841. ...

Mr Arthur G. Cox, the third son of the late Alfred Cox, a pioneer colonist, who met with a trap accident on the 2nd inst. while driving from Temuka to Geraldine with another gentleman, died Monday morning from concussion of the brain. The horse began plunging, and the occupants of the trap were thrown out, Mr Cox's skull being fractured. Deceased was well known in sporting circles, and was one of our best amateur riders.

aged 33 years. Deeply regretted.
BISSET. On August 9th at his residence, Bantaskine Farm, Orari, Christopher
Bisset, aged 60 years.

GREEN. Mr Samuel Green who died of heart disease at Preservation Inlet, a few
days ago, was formerly a farmer near Makikihi. The winding up of his affairs
occupied the District Court here for some time when he lost his farm, he though
over 60 years of age determined to go gold digging again, and took a fancy for
the new field at Coal Creek and Wilson's river. He married again only last
February and his wife accompanied him to the field.
YOUNG. At St Andrews, on August 28th, Thomas David, second son of Alexander and
Elizabeth Young, aged 5 years.
WILLIAMS. The daughter of Mr Williams, of Waitaki North, died suddenly of a

WILLIAM EDGAR BELL, whose body was found in a creek at Winchester on Saturday
last, was held at the Winchester Hotel on Monday before Mr. C. A Wray, coroner.
Winifred Bell, daughter, saw the deceased leave home at 11.30 on Friday after
having drank a bottle of beer. John McIntosh, licensee of the Winchester Hotel,
Richard Webster saw Bell. Thomas Richards, a farmer at Winchester found the body
in a creek. Constable Ryan went to the creek. Dr. Sir W. Blunden examined the

SHEPHERD. On December 3rd, at his brother's residence, Pleasant Point, after a
lingering illness, William Shepherd, aged 61 years.
PETERS. Accidentally drowned at Killafaddy, Launceston, on Dec. 1st, Benjamin,
beloved son of Mrs. R. Peters, Melbourne, and loved brother of Annie Peters,
Timaru, aged 21 years. Deeply regretted.

SHEPHERD - The friends of Mr George Shepherd, are respectfully informed that the
funeral of his late brother, William, will leave his residence, Willow Bank, on
Wednesday, 6th December, at 2 o'clock, for the Pleasant Point Cemetery.
INQUEST:
DAVID MCGIMPSEY. At the inquest on the body of David McGimpsey, who was killed
at the Pakihi Estate, Orari, on Monday, a verdict of accidental death was
returned. He was engaged in rolling a paddock, in which there was a gully.
Knowing his team was a restive one he left the roller and took them by the head.
The horses trampled him and the roller passed over his head. He died before
assistance was procured.
An old identity in the person of ROBERT MAYNE died in the Hospital on Sunday. He
was an old Royal Navy man, and was for 15 years resident at Timaru. Though in a
humble walk of life he was well known about town, and had seen a good many
changes in Timaru.
